Kukra River
The Kukra River (Spanish language, Spanish: Río Kukra; alternates: Rio Cookra, Rio Cucra, Rio Cukra, Río Cookra, Río Cucra, Río Cukra) is a river of Nicaragua. It lies in the southeast of the country and is inhabited by two Rama people, Rama communities and various mestizo settler communities. Much of the river falls within the Rama-Kriol Territory and is thus within the jurisdiction of the Rama-Kriol Territorial Government. It is located south of Bluefields and empties in Bluefields Bay. Economy Along with Bluefields and Río Escondido (Nicaragua), Rio Escondido, the Kukra River has been an important indigenous and Creole (people), Creole agriculture area. The Rama people, Rama grow grains near Bluefields Bay and along the Kukra. Farming is the only industry along the Kukra. Rama People
The Rama are an indigenous people living on the eastern coast of Nicaragua. Since the start of European colonization, the Rama population has declined as a result of disease, conflict, and loss of territory. In recent years, however, the Rama population has increased to around 2,000 individuals. A majority of the population lives on the island of Rama Cay, which is located in the Bluefields Lagoon. Additional small Rama communities are dispersed on the mainland from Bluefields to Greytown. The Rama are one of three main indigenous groups on Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast. Due to centuries of colonial suppression the Rama people’s native language is facing extinction. Mestizo
(; ; fem. ) is a term used for racial classification to refer to a person of mixed Ethnic groups in Europe, European and Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Indigenous American ancestry. In certain regions such as Latin America, it may also refer to people who are culturally European even though their ancestors are not. The term was used as an ethnic/racial category for mixed-race that evolved during the Spanish Empire. Although, broadly speaking, means someone of mixed European/Indigenous heritage, the term did not have a fixed meaning in the colonial period. It was a formal label for individuals in official documents, such as censuses, parish registers, Inquisition trials, and others. Bluefields
Bluefields is the capital of the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, South Caribbean Autonomous Region in Nicaragua. It was also the capital of the former Mosquito Coast, Kingdom of Mosquitia, and later the Zelaya Department, which was divided into North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, North and South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Regions. Creole (people)
Creole peoples are ethnic groups formed during the European colonial era, from the mass displacement of peoples brought into sustained contact with others from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, who converged onto a colonial territory to which they had not previously belonged. Often involuntarily uprooted from their original home, the settlers were obliged to develop and creatively merge the desirable elements from their diverse backgrounds, to produce new varieties of social, linguistic and cultural norms that superseded the prior forms. This process, known as creolization, is characterized by rapid social flux regularized into Creole ethnogenesis. Creole peoples vary widely in ethnic background and mixture and many have since developed distinct ethnic identities. Pheidole
''Pheidole'' () is a genus of ants that belongs to the ant subfamily Myrmicinae. The genus is widespread and ecologically dominant. It probably includes more than 1000 species. The genus first evolved in the Americas, eventually spreading across the globe. Colony structure Most species of ''Pheidole'' are dimorphic, which means that colonies contain two castes of workers, the "minor" workers, and the "major" workers, or "soldiers".
