Kuffner Observatory
The Kuffner observatory is one of two telescope-equipped public astronomy, astronomical public observatory, observatories situated in Austria's capital, Vienna. It is situated in the West of the city's Ottakring district, on the slope of the Gallitzinberg at 302 m altitude. Originally a private research institution, it was converted into an educational astronomy facility after World War II as buildings and city lights had encroached to a degree that severely hampered scientific nightsky observations. Today the main tasks of the observatory consist in public education on astronomy, operating and preserving the historical equipment, and minor projects in scientific astronomy. The observatory was noted for its work on photometry, conducted by astronomer Karl Schwarzschild, star catalogs, and the determining of distances to other stars. Palais Kuffner
The Palais Kuffner is a city-palace in Vienna that was built for the brewery barons von Kuffner. It is located in Ottakring, the 16th Districts of Vienna, district of Vienna. The palace consists of two adjacent buildings that were constructed in quick succession, yet each received its own individual façade. No. 118 was built between 1886 and 1888, and No. 120 followed in 1892/93 for the brewery owner Moritz von Kuffner. The plans were drawn up by Franz von Neumann, and the executed by Anton Adolf Zagorski. Description No. 118: A tall Rustication (architecture), rusticated base zone extends up to nearly half the height of the façade. Starting with rectangular, barred basement windows, four bays with round-arched windows, simple window framings, and prominently sculpted Keystone (architecture), keystones lie above a continuous sill course.
