Kshetri Irabot Singh
Kshetri Irabot Singh was an Indian politician, from Kakching, Manipur. He was born on April 8, 1938. Irabot obtained a M.A. (Political Science) degree from Gauhati University, after which he worked as a teacher. He joined the Communist Party of India Communist Party of India (CPI) is the oldest Marxist–Leninist communist party in India and one of the nine national parties in the country. He was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from the Kakching constituency in the 1974 election. Irabot retained the Kakching seat in the 1980 elections. Kshetrimayum
Kshetrimayum (shortly known as Kshetri) is a Meitei ethnic family name (surname). It is a Meitei yumnak. It’s literal meaning is “House of Kshatriya”. This surname was given to the descendants of Hindu Kshatriyas, coming from outside Manipur and who first started settling down in Manipur during the reign of king Chalamba (1545 to 1562 A.D.) and king Gambhir (1825-1834 A.D.). They were originally Brahmakshatriya from north-eastern part of Karnataka and western Orissa, some of these people migrated to Manipur in the above said time, subsequently settled and got absorbed into Meitei society. This surname does not belong to any Yek Salais (seven clans of Meitei yumnak) since Yek Salais were already formed during the reign of Pakhangba well before their arrival in Manipur. Irabot
Hijam Irabot (30 September 1896 – 26 September 1951), also known as Jana Neta Hijam Irabot, was a politician and leader of Communist party of India and revolutionary social activist from Manipur. He fought against the social evils of the society. He later was jailed for supporting the second Nupi Lan, 1939. In the June/July 1948 election to the Manipur Assembly, Irabot won from the Utlou Constituency. Early life Irabot was born to Hijam Ibungohal Singh and Chongtham Ningol Thambalngambi at Hijam Leikai. After his father's death, he moved with his mother to stay with his aunt at Moirangkhom Sawaijam. He studied at Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Imphal, Manipur (still existing, located at western side of Kangla Fort), till Class 7 and founded two student bodies, Bal Sangha and Chatra Sanmelan.
