The 31st Air Base ( pl, 31. Baza Lotnicza), commonly known as Poznań-Krzesiny Airport is a Polish Air Force base and military airport, located in Krzesiny, part of the Nowe Miasto district of Poznań. The base was officially constituted on 31 December 2000, and since then has been the home base for the 3rd Tactical Squadron. It is the first base to host the recently acquired F-16 fighters. History In 1941, during its occupation of Poznań, Nazi Germany built an aircraft factory at Krzesiny (German: ''Luftwaffenfliegerhorst Kreising''), along with an airfield to service it. The factory, run by Focke-Wulf, was a target for Allied bombers in the course of the war, on 29 May 1944 for Eighth Air Force. Poznań–Ławica Airport
Poznań–Ławica Henryk Wieniawski Airport , built in 1913, is one of the oldest airports in Poland. It is located west of Poznań city centre. It takes its name from the neighborhood of Ławica, part of the city's Poznań–Grunwald, Grunwald district, while the airport actually lies in the Poznań–Jeżyce, Jeżyce district. Synopsis The northern section has been used as a military airport since its inception in 1913 as an German Empire, Imperial German airbase until 23 December 2009. The southern section is used for civilian purposes. The prospect of relocating the airport elsewhere is often raised as a result of the flight path to the runway being located directly over the city. The airport caters for international, domestic and cargo flights and general aviation. A new airport terminal, terminal was opened in 2012 and can handle up to 3.5 million passengers per year. 31st Tactical Air Base
The 31st Tactical Air Base (Polish: 31 Baza Lotnictwa Taktycznego – 31.BLoT) is the biggest military unit of Polish Air Force. The unit was created in 2008 as a result of fusion of three previous units: 31st Air Base, 3rd Tactical Squadron and 6th Tactical Squadron. The unit operates two squadrons of F-16 C/D fighters (16 planes in each squadron). The associated base, Krzesiny air base outside of Poznan, currently operates F-16 fighters only. Nowe Miasto, Poznań
Nowe Miasto (; "New Town") is a part of the city of Poznań in western Poland. It was one of the five governmental districts ''(dzielnicas)'' into which the city was divided prior to 1990, and which are retained for certain administrative purposes. Nowe Miasto consists of those parts of the city which lie on the right (east) bank of the Warta river. 3rd Tactical Squadron
The 3rd Tactical Squadron (known as 3.ELT - 3 Eskadra Lotnictwa Taktycznego in Poland) was a fighter squadron of the Polish Air Force established in 2001 in Poznań, Poland. The squadron was stationed in the 31st Air Base and has acquired F-16 C/D Block 52+ Adv. fighters. From 1954 to 2001 the unit was known as "3. Pułk Lotnictwa Myśliwskiego". In 2008 the unit was fused with the 6th Tactical Squadron and the 31st Air Base. Those three units were transformed into 31st Tactical Air Base unit. Radar is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the distance (''ranging''), angle, and radial velocity of objects relative to the site. Air traffic control (ATC) is a service provided by ground-based air traffic controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and through a given section of controlled airspace, and can provide advisory services to aircraft in non-controlled airspace. The primary purpose of ATC worldwide is to prevent collisions, organize and expedite the flow of air traffic, and provide information and other support for pilots. Air traffic controllers monitor the location of aircraft in their assigned airspace by radar and communicate with the pilots by radio. To prevent collisions, ATC enforces traffic separation rules, which ensure each aircraft maintains a minimum amount of empty space around it at all times.
