Kruiningen-Yerseke Railway Station
Kruiningen-Yerseke is a railway station in Zeeland in the south-west Netherlands. Located between Kruiningen and Yerseke on Nederlandse Spoorwegen's Roosendaal to Vlissingen line, the station was opened by the (privately operated but government-built) State Railways on 1 July 1868 and retains its original building from that date (enlarged in 1890 and 1902). Train service The station is served by trains running twice an hour in each direction on the Amsterdam – Haarlem – Leiden – The Hague – Rotterdam – Dordrecht – Roosendaal – Vlissingen intercity service. Kruiningen
Kruiningen is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Reimerswaal, about 5 km south of the village of Yerseke.''ANWB Topografische Atlas Nederland'', Topografische Dienst and ANWB, 2005. Kruiningen has a station on the railway line Bergen op Zoom - Vlissingen. Kruiningen achieved some notoriety as departure and arrival of the ferry Kruiningen- Perkpolder. In 2003, this ferry closed in connection with the opening of the Westerscheldetunnel. History The place where Kruiningen was built, was one of the islands that later formed Zuid-Beveland. The area was diked by monks of the abbeys of Ten Duinen and Ter Doest. Kruiningen was hit hard during the Flood of 1953, 62 people died and the entire village came for six months under the influence of the tides. Yerseke
Yerseke (, Zeelandic: ) is a village situated on the southern shore of the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt) estuary in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Zeeland. A separate municipality until 1970, it today forms part of the municipality of Reimerswaal (municipality), Reimerswaal. As of 2010 Yerseke had a recorded population of 6,695 inhabitants, living in 2,680 households. The fishing village is well known for its aquaculture. The Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen () or SS (''Company for the Exploitation of the State Railways'') was a private railroad founded to use the government funded railways. The company existed until 1938, when it formally merged with the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HSM) to form the Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The SS was, along with the HSM, the largest railroad company in the Netherlands. In the 19th century, the government constructed a number of state railroads, the '' staatslijnen'', to (major) cities and regions not yet served by the other railroads, but for which it was deemed important to connect them to the country's rail network. These lines were primarily located outside of the relatively densely populated Holland region, where the HSM ran services on the main lines. Rilland
Rilland is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Reimerswaal. History The village was first mentioned in 1186 as Relant, and means land and reed. The name was originally used for the former island which contained the village. The original village was lost in a flood in 1530. In 1773, the Reigersbergsepolder was completed and Rilland developed as a road village. The Reformed Church was built in 1899. It is a small aisleless church. The front of the church was renewed after the 1953 flood. The Catholic St Joseph church was built in 1903 next to the Capuchin monastery. The monastery was disestablished in 1966 and has become a hotel. Rilland was home to 366 people in 1840. Wemeldinge
Wemeldinge is the oldest village in the Zuid-Beveland area of the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Kapelle, about 4 km northwest of Yerseke. It is located within the Eastern Scheldt national park. History The village was first mentioned in 1222 as Gerardus de Wemelbinghe, and means "settlement of the people of Wimeld (person)". Wemeldinge developed in the 11th century on several small ''terp''s (artificial hills). There is a high hill near the village which used to be topped by a wooden tower. The village later expanded towards to dike. The Dutch Reformed church is a double aisled church. The tower was built around 1350. The current spire dates from 1611. The church was enlarged in 1530.
