Kronstadt (russian: Кроншта́дт, Kronshtadt ), also spelled Kronshtadt, Cronstadt or Kronštádt (from german: link=no, Krone for "crown" and ''Stadt'' for "city") is a Russian port city in Kronshtadtsky District of the federal city of Saint Petersburg, located on Kotlin Island, west of Saint Petersburg, near the head of the Gulf of Finland. It is linked to the former Russian capital by a combination levee-causeway-seagate, the St Petersburg Dam, part of the city's flood defences, which also acts as road access to Kotlin island from the mainland. Founded in the early 18th century by Peter the Great, it became an important international centre of commerce whose trade role was later eclipsed by its strategic significance as the primary maritime defence outpost of the former Russian capital. Kronstad, Bergen
Kronstad is a neighbourhood in the borough of Årstad, Bergen, Årstad in the city of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the northern part of the borough, south of the large Store Lungegårdsvannet bay, east of the neighborhood of Solheim, Bergen, Solheim, north of Minde, Bergen, Minde, west of Landås, and west of Møllendal and Haukeland, Bergenhus, Haukeland (in Bergenhus borough). The neighbourhood was named after the old ''Kronstad'' farm (whose successor is the Kronstad Hovedgård manor house), which was formerly known as "Hunstad". After the vicar of Bergen Cathedral purchased the farm in 1705, the name was changed to "Cronstad" which later changed to Kronstad. Buildings Architect Ole Landmark designed several buildings in the area, where a street has been named him. Kronstad Hovedgård
Kronstad Hovedgård is a manor house in the city of Bergen, Norway. It is situated in the borough of Årstad about 2 km south of the Bergenhus on the south shore of the bay of Store Lungegårdsvannet. History The farm of ''Kronstad'', then named ''Hunsstadir'', later ''Honstad'' and ''Hunstad'', was established in the 12th century. It belonged to the monastery of Nonneseter. Vincens Lunge took over the farm in 1528. From 1685 to 1693, the manor belonged to Jørgen Thormøhlen, a merchant, shipowner, slave trader and industrialist. In 1705, vicar of Bergen Cathedral Anders Bruun purchased the manor an renamed it ''Cronstad''. Christian Gerhard Ameln, a merchant, purchased it in 1781, constructing several new buildings and clearing the fields. Ameln also constructed a new one-floored manor house. Kroonstad
Kroonstad (Afrikaans directly translated "Crown City") is the third largest city in the Free State (after Bloemfontein and Welkom) and lies two hours' drive on the N1 from Gauteng. Maokeng is an area within Kroonstad, and is occasionally used as a synonym of the town itself. It is the second-largest commercial and urban centre in the Northern Free State (after Welkom), and an important railway junction on the main line from Cape Town to Johannesburg. ''Maokeng'' is Sesotho and means "place of the thorn trees (mimosa trees)". History Kroonstad was established in 1855 by the Irish pioneer Joseph Orpen, and was the first founded after the independence of the Orange Free State. While ' means "crown", this was in fact the name of a horse that had drowned in the nearby ford. A lover of animals, Orpen had witnessed the incident, and named the infant settlement in honour of the unfortunate creature. Similarly, the ford in question came to be known as ''Kroondrift''.
