Krapp's Last Tape
''Krapp's Last Tape'' is a 1958 one-act play, in English, by Samuel Beckett. With a cast of one man, it was written for Northern Irish actor Patrick Magee (actor), Patrick Magee and first titled "Magee monologue". It was inspired by Beckett's experience of listening to Magee reading extracts from ''Molloy (novel), Molloy'' and ''From an Abandoned Work'' on the BBC Third Programme in December 1957. It is considered to be among Beckett’s major dramas. History First publication In a letter to a London bookseller Jake Schwartz on 15 March 1958, Beckett wrote that he had "'four states, in typescript, with copious notes and dirty corrections, of a short stage monologue I have just written (in English) for Pat Magee. This was composed on the machine from a tangle of old notes, so I have not the Manuscript, MS to offer you." Eugene Hamlet Krapp (May 12, 1887 – April 13, 1923) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1911 to 1915. He played for the Cleveland Naps and Buffalo Buffeds/Blues. ''Krapp, ou, La dernière bande'' (English: ''The Last Tape'', German: ''Krapp, oder Das letzte Band'') is a chamber opera in one act by Marcel Mihalovici with a libretto by Samuel Beckett. The libretto is based on Beckett's 1958 play ''Krapp's Last Tape'', and large portions of the play's script were lifted for use in the libretto. Like the play, the opera is a monologue with the only character being that of Krapp. The opera was commissioned jointly by the Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française and the Bielefeld Opera, Germany. From the very beginning the opera's libretto has existed in three different languages: English (from the original play), French (for the French premiere) and German (for the German premiere). It premiered using the French-language version on RTF radio on 15 May 1961 and had its stage debut in Paris on 3 July 1961 at the Théâtre des Nations. George Philip Krapp
George Philip Krapp (1872–1934) was a scholar of the English language who was born in Cincinnati. He graduated from Wittenberg College in 1894 and received a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1899. His doctoral thesis was on the Legend of the Purgatory of St. Patrick. In 1897 Krapp joined the faculty of Columbia University, becoming professor of English at the University of Cincinnati (1908–1910) before gaining the same title at Columbia (1910–1934). His best known achievement is conceiving and in large part undertaking the six volume Anglo-Saxon Poetic Records edition (begun in 1931, and concluded by Krapp's collaborator Elliott Van Kirk Dobbie in 1953). Krapp is also noted for his books ''Modern English: Its Growth and Present Use'' (1909) in which he argued "that 'good English' was not determined by the conformity to grammatical laws, but by the common use of language", and ''The English Language in America'' (1925) described by Henry Blake Fuller as "detailing the ... Edgar Krapp
Edgar Krapp (born June 3, 1947 in Bamberg) is a German organist and music professor. Krapp is a member of the Board of the Neue Bachgesellschaft (New Bach Society) in Leipzig and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. Biography Krapp's first organ lessons were as a member of the cathedral choir. After graduation he studied organ with Franz Lehrndorfer in Munich and with Marie-Claire Alain in Paris. During his studies he won many prizes at international music competitions. From 1974 to 1993 he served as the successor of Helmut Walcha at the Music Academy in Frankfurt and from 1982 to 1991 he taught as a visiting professor at the Salzburg Mozarteum. In 1993 he was appointed as successor to Franz Lehrndorfer at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, where he taught until 2012. His successor since this time is Bernhard Haas.
