Krainz Woods
Krainz Woods (colloquially known as Krainz and Krainz Park) is a neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. The neighborhood was named after Captain John Krainz Jr., a World War II hero from Detroit. The neighborhood was once home to Malcolm X, who lived on Keystone Street in the 1950s, and Spencer Haywood in the 1960s. The Sojourner Truth housing project is located there. Many Motown singing groups, such as The Dramatics and The Floaters, were from the Sojourner Truth housing projects. In 2009, Mayor of Detroit Dave Bing led a ribbon-cutting dedication of Krainz Park. History Originally, Krainz Woods was a deeply wooded area located west of the Village of Norris. It later became a part of Hamtramck Township, and the City of Detroit annexed the area in 1916. ''The Michigan Citizen'' (sometimes called just ''Michigan Citizen'') was a weekly newspaper distributed in Detroit, Michigan. ''The Michigan Citizen'' has been published on Sundays since November 1978. Charles D. Kelly (1932-2006) was the newspaper's founding publisher. ''The Michigan Citizen'' was a publication for Michigan's African-American and progressive-minded community. Charles and his wife, Teresa, founded ''The Michigan Citizen'' newspaper on their dining-room table in Benton Harbor, Michigan, in November 1978. He grew the paper from a 12-page tabloid with an original circulation of 3000 distributed in the Benton Harbor area to a 16-page broadsheet with a statewide circulation of 56,000. He opened a Detroit-area office of the paper in 1985. Michigan Chronicle
''The Chronicle'' is a weekly African-American newspaper based in Detroit, Michigan. It was founded in 1936 by John H. Sengstacke, editor of the ''Chicago Defender''. Together with the ''Defender'' and a handful of other African-American newspapers, it is owned by Detroit-based Real Times Inc. Its headquarters are in the Real Times offices in Midtown Detroit. Early history The ''Chronicle'' first editor was Louis E. Martin, whom Sengstacke sent to Detroit on June 6, giving him a $5.00 raise above his $15-per-week salary at the ''Chicago Defender'', $10 in cash and a one-way bus ticket. Mound Correctional Facility
Mound Correctional Facility was a Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) prison located in eastern Detroit, Michigan. It was adjacent to the Detroit Reentry Center (formerly the Ryan Correctional Facility). The facility which housed Mound was reopened in August 2013 as the Detroit Detention Center. History Mound opened in 1994. It was on land previously used by DaimlerChrysler AG for storing automobiles.
