Kraai River
The Kraai River (literally "Crow River") is a tributary of the Orange River (also called ''Gariep River'' by locals) that flows near Barkly East in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The Kraai River originates in the mountains south of Lesotho and flows westward from the confluence of the Bell River and the Sterk Spruit at Moshesh's Ford at all the way to Aliwal North, where it joins the Orange River at . The river flows almost entirely over sandstone rocks of the Clarens Formation. The Kraai is fishable, containing rainbow trout, brown trout and smallmouth yellowfish. In 1881 a sandstone arch bridge called the J W Sauer bridge was completed over the river. The bridge linked communities in the Kraai River basin with Aliwal North. Barkly East
Barkly East is a town in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, seat of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, and 117 km by road E.S.E. of Aliwal North, lying in the mountainous area just south of Lesotho. The town lies at the southern tip of the Drakensberg on the Langkloofspruit, a tributary of the Kraai River which, in turn is a tributary of the Orange River at an elevation of 1 790 meter (5 873 foot) above sealevel. Barkly East is characterized by rugged mountains and green valleys. Snow falls in winter, and the hamlet of Rhodes is 60 km or an hour's drive from Barkly East on the R396. Both are within the boundaries of the Senqu Local Municipality. Karnmelk Spruit
The Karringmelk Spruit (literally "Buttermilk Spruit") is a tributary of the Kraai River in the Senqu area in the northeastern part of the Eastern Cape. It rises to the south of Wittenberg near Lesotho and flows as a stream southwestward through valleys and gorges east of the town of Lady Grey and further south to where it joins the Kraai River at . The river is crossed by a historical railway line (at ), and the Jan Kemp Vorster Bridge (1973) carries car traffic over the river in the direction of Barkly East, about 50 km away. The smallmouth yellowfish (''Labeobarbus aeneus'') is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus ''Labeobarbus''. It has become an invasive species in rivers of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, such as the Mbhashe River. Introduction The Orange-Vaal River system is one of the few in South Africa that is truly international. The brown trout (''Salmo trutta'') is a European species of salmonid fish that has been widely introduced into suitable environments globally. Clarens Formation
The Clarens Formation is a geological formation found in several localities in Lesotho and in the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape provinces in South Africa. It is the uppermost of the three formations found in the Stormberg Group of the greater Karoo Supergroup rocks and represents the final phase of preserved sedimentation of the Karoo Basin. Geology The Clarens Formation is composed nearly entirely of fine to medium-grained, thickly-bedded sandstones that range from pale orange or pinkish to cream in color. It is characterized by its remarkable gross lithological uniformity and that its deposits mainly outcrop as high cliffs.
