Kouvola–Kotka Railway
The Kouvola–Kotka railway ( fi, Kouvola–Kotka-rata, sv, Kouvola–Kotka-banan), also called the Kotka railway ( fi, Kotkan rata, sv, Kotkabanan) is a 1,524 mm (5 ft) railway in Finland, connecting the towns of Kouvola and Kotka in the region of Kymenlaakso. History Kotka had begun growing into an industrial community from the 1850s. As the Kotka fortresses had been destroyed during the Crimean War and the islands of Kotkansaari and Hovinsaari fell out of military use, the Finnish state offered to lease out plots on the former for industrial use in 1868. The first industrial plot was awarded to Carl Henrik Ahlquist of Hamina, and the sawmill he constructed in collaboration with Hackman & Co started operations in 1871, marking the beginning of industrialization in Kotka. Talks regarding the construction of a branch of the Riihimäki–Saint Petersburg railway to southern Kymenlaakso sprung up soon after the former's inauguration in September 1870. Kymenlaakso
Kymenlaakso ( sv, Kymmenedalen; " Kymi/Kymmene Valley") is a region in Finland. It borders the regions of Uusimaa, Päijät-Häme, South Savo and South Karelia and Russia (Leningrad Oblast). Its name means literally ''The Valley of River Kymi''. Kymijoki is one of the biggest rivers in Finland with a drainage basin with 11% of the area of Finland. The city of Kotka with 51,000 inhabitants is located at the delta of River Kymi and has the most important import harbour in Finland. Other cities are Kouvola further in the inland which has after a municipal merger 81,000 inhabitants and the old bastion town Hamina. Kymenlaakso was one of the first industrialized regions of Finland. It became the most important region for paper and pulp industry in Finland. History During the planning stages of the Saint Petersburg railway, two track alignment options were weighed with regard to connecting the fledgling Finnish railways with the important waterborne route on lake Päijänne: one passing through Anianpelto in Asikkala on the narrow isthmus between lake Vesijärvi and the Päijänne, and another grazing the Vesijärvi on its southern shore, in the village of Lahti in Hollola. VR commuter rail ( fi, VR:n lähiliikenne, ) is a Finnish commuter rail system operated by VR – the national railway operator of Finland – under a public service obligation agreement with the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Finland. The operations are planned in trilateral co-operation between the ministry, the operator and various regional transport authorities. VR commuter rail consists of seven alphabetically identified services on six different railway lines. Four of these services terminate at Helsinki, thus serving multiple Helsinki commuter rail stations along their routes.
