Louisiana Creole ( lou, Kréyòl Lalwizyàn, links=no) is a French-based creole languages, French-based creole language spoken by fewer than 10,000 people, mostly in the state of Louisiana. It is spoken today by people who may racially identify as White Americans, White, African Americans, Black, Multiracial Americans, mixed, and Native Americans in the United States, Native American, as well as Cajun and Louisiana Creole people, Creole. It should not be confused with its sister language, Louisiana French, a dialect of the French language. Many Louisiana Creole people, Louisiana Creoles do not speak the Louisiana Creole language and may instead use French or English as their everyday languages. Due to the rapidly shrinking number of speakers, Louisiana Creole is considered an endangered language. Louisiana Creoles (french: Créoles de la Louisiane, lou, Moun Kréyòl la Lwizyàn, es, Criollos de Luisiana) are people descended from the inhabitants of colonial Louisiana before it became a part of the United States during the period of both French and Spanish rule. As an ethnic group, their ancestry is mainly of Louisiana French, West African, Spanish and Native American origin. Louisiana Creoles share cultural ties such as the traditional use of the French, Spanish, and Creole languages and predominant practice of Catholicism.
