Kothi, Hyderabad
Koti (or Kothi) is a locality in the city of Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It is one of the best-known commercial Old Suburbs of Hyderabad. There are two areas in the vicinity: King Koti and Ram Koti. History The area's name comes from Koti Residency, ''koti'' meaning a mansion, for the lavish mansion built in Victorian and Corinthian style once belonging the British resident James Achilles Kirkpatrick and which was, in 1949, converted into the campus of the Osmania University College for Women. Background Originally the Devdi was owned by a nobleman Kamal Khan, and later by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam of Hyderabad and Berar. The Nizam then inhabited the palace after his ascension to the throne in 1911, unlike his father who lived in Chowmahalla Palace. Kothi State
Kothi State (or Koti State) was a princely state of the British Raj. It belonged to the Bagelkhand Agency of Central India. Its capital was at Kothi, in modern Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. It was a relatively small Sanad History Kothi State was founded at an uncertain date by a Rajput ruler who expelled the former Bharr ruler of the area. Towards the beginning of the nineteenth century, and in much the same manner as neighbouring Sohawal, Kothi became a British protectorate initially subordinate to Panna State. However, a separate ''sanad'' was granted to ''Rais'' Lal Duniyapati Singh in 1810. The last ruler of Kothi signed the instrument of accession to the Indian Union on 1 January 1950. Kothi (gender)
A kothi in the culture of the Indian subcontinent, is a man or boy who takes on an "effeminate" role in same sex relationships, often with a desire to be the penetrated member in sexual intercourse. The origins of the term Kothi are unclear. The original meaning was intended as a slur, similar to "fag" or "sissy." Local equivalents include ''durani'' (Kolkata), ''menaka'' (Cochin), '' meti'' (Nepal), and ''zenana'' (Pakistan). The male partners who perform the penetrative acts are known as Panthi. Kothis differ from Hijras as they do not live in the kind of intentional communities that hijras usually live in. They are similar to the Hijra in that they may take a same-sex lover for a period of time, and they may perform sexual favors for men through prostitution. Other sources state that the term Kothi is an all-encompassing term for males in India who do not conform to their social gender. So the term Kothi would include the identity of Hijra, among others.
