Charles Kortright
Charles Jesse Kortright (9 January 1871 – 11 December 1952) was an English cricketer, who played for Essex and Free Foresters. In his obituary in the 1953 edition of ''Wisden Cricketers' Almanack'', he was described as "probably the fastest bowler in the history of the game", a judgement supported by those who saw and faced him. Background He was the son of Augustus Kortright, an officer in the 68th (Durham) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) and his wife Mary Jephson, daughter of the Rev. John Mounteney Jephson. He was educated at Brentwood School, Essex, and at Tonbridge School 1885–1888. Given a stake in a brewery in Kent by his father, he took steps to learn the business. His first class cricket career began in 1893, and he sold out of the brewery in 1894. Cricket Charles Kortright played for Essex from 1889 to 1907. Having a private income, he played as an amateur. Frances Isabella Staveley Berkeley Wood Kortright wrote as Fanny Aikin Kortright and Berkeley Aikin (28 January 1821 – 31 October 1900) was an English governess, anti-suffragist, writer and editor. Life Kortright was born in 1821 in Southwark. She was the last of seventeen children born to Elizabeth (born Aikin) and Nicholas Berk(e)ley Kortright. Her mother was Irish and her father was born in New York but he had spent his career as a Royal Navy officer. She spent her childhood in Devon, London and St Omer. Her elder sister acted as her governess. She was well read. Her father died in 1840 and the family had no income. She took jobs with different families as a governess and she supplemented her income by writing articles for the Family Herald which by 1855 had a circulation of 300,000. Sir Cornelius Hendricksen Kortright, (26 December 1817 – 23 December 1897) was a British civil servant who held positions including Governor of British Guiana. Kortright was baptised on 8 January 1818 at Saint Mary church in London. He was the son of Lawrence and Jane Maria Kortright. He died on 23 December 1897 in Ontario, Canada, three days before his eightieth birthday. Kortright was knighted in 1882. While in Australia, Cornelius Kortright worked for Edmond Morey, and is mentioned in chapters four and five of 'Reminiscences of a pioneer in New South Wales.
