Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi Raion
Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi Raion uk, Корсунь-Шевченківський район was a raion (district) of Cherkasy Oblast, central Ukraine. Its administrative centre was located at the town of Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi. The raion covered an area of 896 square kilometres. The raion was abolished on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Cherkasy Oblast to four. The area of Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi Raion was split between Cherkasy Raion and Zvenyhorodka Raion. Raions of Ukraine (often translated as "districts"; Ukrainian: ра́йон, tr. ''raion''; plural: райо́ни, tr. ''raiony'') are the second level of administrative division in Ukraine, below the oblast. Raions were created in a 1922 administrative reform of the Soviet Union, to which Ukraine, as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, belonged. Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi ( uk, Ко́рсунь-Шевче́нківський, ; pl, Korsuń Szewczenkowski; russian: Корсунь-Шевченковский) is a small city located in Cherkasy Raion of Cherkasy Oblast (province) in central Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. The city rests on the banks of the Ros River. Population: History A fortress Korsun was founded in 1032 by the Kievan Rus' prince Yaroslav the Wise and served the protection of Kyiv from nomads from the southern steppe regions. Stebliv ( uk, Стеблів, russian: Стеблёв) is an urban-type settlement located in Zvenyhorodka Raion (district) of Cherkasy Oblast (province) in central Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Stebliv settlement hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. The townlet rests at a bend on the Ros River, some 16 kilometres from Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi. Population: History Situated on the Ros' River, water surrounds most of the historically settled areas of Stebliv, which is also protected by cliffs and natural ramparts. Given the evidence of Trypillian, Scythian, and Chernyakhov culture settlements, the area has been populated for quite some time and was very often the site of fierce battles.
