Lake Tengiz
Tengiz Lake ( kk, Теңіз көлі, ''Teñız kölı''; russian: Тенгиз) is a saline lake in north-central part of Kazakhstan. On 16 October 1976, the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 23 unintentionally splashed down into the northern part of the lake, which was frozen, crashing through the ice. The crew was saved thanks to a very difficult but successful rescue operation. Geography Tengiz is a shallow lake, subject to seasonal variations in water level. Its eastern shore is deeply indented and includes the Tengizi Islands. Akmola Region
Akmola Region ( kz, Ақмола облысы, translit=Aqmola oblysy; russian: Акмолинская область, Akmolinskaya oblast) is a centrally located region of Kazakhstan. Its capital is Kokshetau. The national capital, Astana, is enclosed by the region, but is politically separate from Akmola Region. The region's population is 715,000; Kokshetau's is 157,000. Some gold and coal mining occur in the area. Geography The area of the region is 146,200 square kilometers. Akmola, along with Ulytau Region and Karaganda Region are Kazakhstan's only regions which don't touch the country's outer borders. The region borders North Kazakhstan Region in the north, Pavlodar Region in the east, Karagandy Region in the south, and Kostanay Region in the west. The Sileti river flows through the region. The Nura ( kk, Нұра, ''Nura''; russian: Нура) is a major watercourse of northeast-central Kazakhstan. It is long and drains an area of . Course The river rises in the Kyzyltas mountains, a subrange of the Kazakh Uplands and flows initially north-northwestwards for about . It then turns to the west and flows in that direction for , then southwest for . The Nura turns north near Esengeldi for about , eventually turning southwest as it draws close to Nur-Sultan near the river Irtysh. From there, it flows southwest for almost , through a series of lakes, finally ending in the endorheic Lake Tengiz. Astana
Astana, previously known as Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, Akmola, and most recently Nur-Sultan, is the capital city of Kazakhstan. The city lies on the banks of the Ishim (river), Ishim River in the north-central part of Kazakhstan, within the Akmola Region, though administered as a city with special status separately from the rest of the region. A 2020 official estimate reported a population of 1,136,008 within the city limits, making it the List of most populous cities in Kazakhstan, second-largest city in the country, after Almaty, which had been the capital until 1997.
