Kooyman Peak
Sherwin Peak () is a peak, high, surmounting the east side of Otago Glacier southeast of Mount Chivers, in the north part of the Queen Elizabeth Range (Antarctica), Queen Elizabeth Range, Antarctica. Exploration and name Sherwin Peak was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from tellurometer surveys and Navy air photos, 1960–62. It was named by the United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for James S. Sherwin, ionospheric scientist at Little America V, 1958. Location Sherwin Peak is in the northeast of the Queen Elizabeth Range. It rises above Otago Glacier, which flows northwest along its southwest side to Nimrod Glacier. Nottarp Glacier and Heidemann Glacier are to the east and Tranter Glacier forms to the north of Sherwin Peak and flows north to Nimrod Glacier. Queen Elizabeth Range (Antarctica)
The Queen Elizabeth Range is a rugged mountain range of the Transantarctic Mountains System, located in the Ross Dependency region of Antarctica. It parallels the eastern side of Marsh Glacier for nearly from Nimrod Glacier in the north to Law Glacier in the south. Mount Markham (4,350 m), is the highest elevation in the range. Named by J.H. Miller of the New Zealand party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1956–58) who, with G.W. Marsh, explored this area. It was named for Queen Elizabeth II, the patron of the expedition. Otago Glacier
The Nimrod Glacier is a major glacier about 135 km (85 mi) long, flowing from the polar plateau in a northerly direction through the Transantarctic Mountains between the Geologists and Miller Ranges, then northeasterly between the Churchill Mountains and Queen Elizabeth Range, and finally spilling into Shackleton Inlet and the Ross Ice Shelf between Capes Wilson and Lyttelton. It was photographed from the air by USN Operation Highjump, 1946–47. The name, given by US-ACAN, is in association with Shackleton Inlet and is for the ''Nimrod'', the ship of the British Antarctic Expedition (1907–09) under Ernest Shackleton. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN or US-ACAN) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names responsible for recommending commemorative names for features in Antarctica. History The committee was established in 1943 as the Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN). It became the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947. Fred G. Alberts was Secretary of the Committee from 1949 to 1980. By 1959, a structured nomenclature was reached, allowing for further exploration, structured mapping of the region and a unique naming system. A 1990 ACAN gazeeter of Antarctica listed 16,000 names. Little America V
Little America was a series of Antarctic exploration bases from 1929 to 1958, located on the Ross Ice Shelf, south of the Bay of Whales. The coordinates are approximate. Little America I The first base in the series was established in January 1929 by Richard Byrd, and was abandoned in 1930. This was where the film ''With Byrd at the South Pole'' (1930), about Byrd's trip to the South Pole, was filmed. Little America II Little America II was established in 1934, some above the site of the original base, with some of the original base accessed via tunnel. This base was briefly set adrift in 1934, but the iceberg fused to the main glacier. A mountain is an elevated portion of the Earth's crust, generally with steep sides that show significant exposed bedrock. Although definitions vary, a mountain may differ from a plateau in having a limited summit area, and is usually higher than a hill, typically rising at least 300 metres (1,000 feet) above the surrounding land.
