Komikon
Komikon (with ''komik'' as the Tagalized form for ''comic'', and ''convention'') is an annual comic book fan convention in the Philippines founded by Artist's Den to be the first convention solely dedicated for comic book enthusiasts. The first convention was held at the U.P. Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman, Quezon City, on October 22, 2005. Since then, Filipino fans have gathered annually to meet with the country's local talents and exchange common interest in the comic book genre. The artists who have graced the convention are Gerry Alanguilan, Leinil Yu, Carlo Pagulayan, Edgar Tadeo, Pol Medina, Jr., Carlo Vergara, Carlo J. Caparas amongst other. Komikon provides avenue for independent publishers to showcase their books in the market, and get feedback from readers and fans. It also provides opportunities for aspiring artists through its various art contests and portfolio reviews conducted by David Campiti of Glasshouse Graphics. Gerry Alanguilan
Doroteo Gerardo N. Alanguilan Jr. (20 January 1968 – 21 December 2019), also known in the Philippines by his alias Komikero, was a Philippines, Filipino comic book artist, writer, and architect from San Pablo, Laguna. He was an important figure in the Philippine comics renaissance of the 1990s and early 2000s, and is known internationally for his graphic novels ''Wasted (comics), Wasted'' and ''Elmer (comics), Elmer'', and for his inking on American superhero comics such as ''Wetworks (comics), Wetworks'', ''X-Men'', ''Superman: Birthright'', ''Wolverine (comic book), Wolverine'', and ''Fantastic Four''. Carlo Vergara
Visconde Carlo San Juan Vergara or simply known as Carlo Vergara (born January 25, 1971) is a Filipino graphic designer and illustrator best known for creating the comic book character Zsazsa Zaturnnah. Vergara is also a theatre performer and published playwright. Biography The son of a tax lawyer and an English teacher, Vergara began to draw even before he started school. He considered drawing as a hobby, and did not want it to be part of his profession. Though he had been accepted in the College of Architecture at the University of the Philippines, he opted to take Marketing Management at the De La Salle University (DLSU), and graduated in 1990. A comic book convention or comic-con is an event with a primary focus on comic books and comic book culture, in which comic book fans gather to meet creators, experts, and each other. Commonly, comic conventions are multi-day events hosted at convention centers, hotels, or college campuses. They feature a wide variety of activities and panels, with a larger number of attendees participating in cosplay than most other types of fan conventions. Comic book conventions are also used as a vehicle for industry, in which publishers, distributors, and retailers represent their comic-related releases. Antony de Zuñiga (November 8, 1932 – May 11, 2012) who worked primarily under the name Tony DeZuniga, was a Filipino comics artist and illustrator best known for his works for DC Comics. He co-created the fictional characters Jonah Hex and Black Orchid. DeZuniga was the first Filipino comic book artist whose work was accepted by American publishers, paving the way for many other Filipino artists to enter the international comic book industry. Alex Niño (born May 1, 1940) is a Filipino comics artist best known for his work for the American publishers DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and Warren Publishing, and in '' Heavy Metal'' magazine. Biography Early life and career Alex Niño was born May 1, 1940, in Tarlac, Central Luzon, the Philippines, the son of a professional photographer. Alfredo Alcala
Alfredo P. Alcala (August 23, 1925 – April 4, 2000) was a Filipino comics artist, born in Talisay, Negros Occidental in the Philippines. Alcala was an established illustrator whose works appeared in the ''Alcala Komix Magazine''. His 1963 creation '' Voltar'' introduced him to an international audience, particularly in the United States. Alcala garnered awards in science fiction during the early part of the 1970s. Nicholas Anthony Manabat (2 September 1972 – 5 November 1995) was a Filipino comic book artist, best known for co-creating ''Cybernary''. Early life Manabat was born in British Hong Kong. As CEO of Glass House Graphics, Campiti oversees an international animation studio and agency of illustrators, writers, painters, and digital designers. Early life Campiti is the adopted son of Charles H. and Rose Campiti. He graduated from Warwood High School and West Liberty University. He began writing as a child.
