Komet Windpump
Komet Windpump () is a former windpump in Banjarbaru, Indonesia. Built in 1972, it is one of the oldest landmarks in the city. Although dismantled in 2008, the windpump was restored in late 2021 purely as a monument. As it has become a widely recognized symbol for the general public. History The windpump was built in 1972, intended to pump water into storage for what was then a part of Banjar Regency. At the time, this area frequently experienced severe dry seasons. The pump was constructed by a Russian investor who worked on an iron mine project in the region. It was named "Komet", meaning comet, due to its shape. However, the windpump did not work well and was rarely used. The windpump was among the first landmarks for the newly-established city of Banjarbaru. Windpump
A windpump is a type of windmill which is used for pumping water. Windpumps were used to pump water since at least the 9th century in what is now Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. The use of wind pumps became widespread across the Muslim world and later spread to China and Indian subcontinent, India. Windmills were later used extensively in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and the East Anglia area of Great Britain, from the late Middle Ages onwards, to drain land for agricultural or building purposes. Simon Stevin's work in the ''waterstaet'' involved improvements to the sluices and spillways to control flooding. Windmills were already in use to pump the water out, but in ''Van de Molens'' (''On mills''), he suggested improvements, including the idea that the wheels should move slowly, and a better system for meshing of the gear teeth. Banjarbaru
Banjarbaru is the capital city of South Kalimantan, one of the provinces in Indonesia. It is located southeast of Banjarmasin, the largest city of the province. The city had a population of 248,423 as of the 2017 Census, and the latest official population estimate (as of 2019) is 262,719. Banjar Regency
Banjar Regency is one of the eleven regencies in the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan; the capital is Martapura. It covers an area of 4,668.5 km2, and had a population of 506,839 at the 2010 Census, 553,721 at the 2015 Census and 565,635 at the 2020 Census. The official estimate as at mid 2021 was 572,109. A comet is an icy, small Solar System body that, when passing close to the Sun, warms and begins to release gases, a process that is called outgassing.
