Kollwitzplatz
Kollwitzplatz is a city square in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg, district of Pankow. The square forms the center of the so-called "Kollwitzkiez". It was named, on 7 October 1947, after the German graphic artist and sculptor Käthe Kollwitz, who spent a large part of her life here in the house at Weissenburger Straße No. 25 (destroyed in the war, since 1947 property Kollwitzstraße No. 56a). Until then, it was called Wörther Platz; a name that was given to it when the area was planned for construction in 1875. Indirectly, this name is also a reminder of her husband Karl Kollwitz, who worked here as a physician until 1940 and thus shaped the area around the square independently of his wife. The triangular complex is bordered by Kollwitzstraße, Knaackstraße and Wörther Straße (with Husemannstraße branching off from it). In total, the square is about 6000 m2 in size. Prenzlauer Berg
Prenzlauer Berg () is a locality of Berlin, forming the southerly and most urban district of the borough of Pankow. From its founding in 1920 until 2001, Prenzlauer Berg was a district of Berlin in its own right. However, that year it was incorporated (along with the borough of Weißensee) into the greater district of Pankow. From the 1960s onward, Prenzlauer Berg was associated with proponents of East Germany's diverse counterculture including Christian activists, bohemians, state-independent artists, and the gay community. It was an important site for the peaceful revolution that brought down the Berlin Wall in 1989. In the 1990s the borough was also home to a vibrant squatting scene. The Wasserturm Prenzlauer Berg is Berlin's oldest water tower, completed in 1877 and in use until 1952. The structure was designed by Henry Gill and built by the English Waterworks Company. Käthe Kollwitz
Käthe Kollwitz ( born as Schmidt; 8 July 1867 – 22 April 1945) was a German artist who worked with painting, printmaking (including etching, lithography and woodcuts) and sculpture. Her most famous art cycles, including ''The Weavers'' and ''The Peasant War'', depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Despite the realism of her early works, her art is now more closely associated with Expressionism. Kollwitz was the first woman not only to be elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts but also to receive honorary professor status. Karl Kollwitz
Karl Kollwitz (13 June 1863 – 19 July 1940) was a German physician who was known for his medical services to the poor in Berlin. Biography Johannes Carl August Kollwitz was born in to a large family where he and his sister Lisbeth were the only his parents' nine children. After the father's early death his mother sent her nine-year-old son to one of the Königsberg orphanages, from which Karl Kollwitz later attended the Royal Wilhelm Gymnasium in Königsberg. Despite his mother's death and him becoming an orphan at the age of fifteen, Kollwitz was able to graduate from high school, enter the University of Königsberg, receive a medical education and a doctorate degree. After his marriage in 1891 to the artist Käthe Schmidt, Karl moved with her to Berlin, where he opened his medical practice in the Prenzlauer Berg area. Gustav Seitz
Gustav Seitz (11 September 1906 – 26 October 1969) was a German sculptor and artist. Life Seitz was born in the Neckarau quarter of Mannheim, the son of a plasterer. He attended school locally till 1921 and then embarked on a traineeship in his father's trade. In 1922 he visited the Kunsthalle (Modern and contemporary art museum) in Mannheim, and was moved to embark on two-year apprenticeship as a stonemason and sculptor across the river in Ludwigshafen with the sculptor August Dursy. The Berlin Kulturbrauerei (literally "Culture Brewery") is a building complex in Berlin, Germany. Originally built and operated as a brewery, its courtyards and unique architecture have been protected as a monument since 1974 and it is one of the few well-preserved examples of industrial architecture in Berlin dating from the end of the 19th century. It is supported by the Treuhandliegenschaftsgesellschaft (TLG) and operated commercially as a cultural centre in the Kollwitz neighborhood of the Prenzlauer Berg district ( Borough of Pankow).
