Kodiak, Alaska
Kodiak (Alutiiq: , russian: Кадьяк), formerly Paul's Harbor, is the main city and one of seven communities on Kodiak Island in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska. All commercial transportation between the island's communities and the outside world goes through this city via ferryboat or airline. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city is 5,581, down from 6,130 in 2010. It is the tenth-largest city in Alaska. Originally inhabited by Alutiiq natives for over 7,000 years, the city was settled in the 18th century by the subjects of the Russian crown and became the capital of Russian Alaska. Russian harvesting of the area's sea otter pelts led to the near extinction of the animal in the following century and led to wars with and enslavement of the natives for over 150 years. Kodiak Island (Alutiiq: ''Qikertaq''), is a large island on the south coast of the U.S. state of Alaska, separated from the Alaska mainland by the Shelikof Strait. Akhiok ( in Alutiiq; russian: Акхиок) is a second-class city in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, United States. Akhiok is Kodiak's southernmost village. The population was 63 at the 2020 census. Akhiok, which does not have a post office, is a rural location in postal code 99615 that belongs to Kodiak. The village is sometimes called Alitak, after a nearby bay. Chiniak (''Cing’iyak'' in Alutiiq) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, United States. The population was 47 at the 2010 census, down from 50 in 2000. Geography Chiniak is located at (57.610603, -152.199817). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.18%, is water. Climate Demographics Chiniak first appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census as an unincorporated Inuit Village of 24 persons (all Inuit). It was likely abandoned some point soon after, as it did not appear on the 1890 census or until 100 years later in 1990, after the area was resettled by non-natives and made a census-designated place. Geography Ouzinkie is located at (57.923, -152.502). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of , of which is land and (21.48%) is water. Climate Demographics Ouzinkie first appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census as the unincorporated village of "Oozinkie." All 45 of its residents were Creole (Mixed Russian and Alaskan Native). In 1890, it reported as "Uzinkee" and included Yelovoi Village. All 74 residents were Creole. It did not appear again until 1920 when it reported as "Ouzinkee." Port Lions ( in Alutiiq) is a city located on Kodiak Island in the Kodiak Island Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 194, down from 256 in 2000. Port Lions was built to house the inhabitants of Ag'waneq from the neighboring island of Afognak and Port Wakefield from Raspberry Island, after their villages were destroyed by the Good Friday earthquake in 1964.
