The Georgian Coast Guard ( ka, საქართველოს სანაპირო დაცვა) is the maritime arm of the Georgian Border Police, within the Ministry for Internal Affairs. It is responsible for the maritime protection of the entire coastline of Georgia, as well as the Georgian territorial waters. The primary missions of the service are administration of the territorial waters, marine pollution protection, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, port security and maritime defense. Sukhumi (russian: Суху́м(и), ) or Sokhumi ( ka, სოხუმი, ), also known by its Abkhaz name Aqwa ( ab, Аҟәа, ''Aqwa''), is a city in a wide bay on the Black Sea's eastern coast. It is both the capital and largest city of the Republic of Abkhazia, which has controlled it since the Abkhazia war in 1992–93. However, internationally Abkhazia is considered part of Georgia. The city, which has an airport, is a port, major rail junction and a holiday resort because of its beaches, sanatoriums, mineral-water spas and semitropical climate. Gocha Vetriakov ( ka, გოჩა ვეტრიაკოვი; russian: Гоча Ветряков, ''Gocha Vetryakov'') is a former Georgian naval officer who commanded the Georgian Navy from 2005 to 2006. Besik "Beso" Shengelia ( ka, ბესიკ ესოშენგელია; 3 November 1967 – 28 February 2016) was a Georgian naval officer, Captain 1st Rank, who commanded the Georgian Navy in 2008. Shengelia attended a naval college in Kiev, Ukraine, from 1984 to 1988. After four years of service in the Soviet Black Sea Fleet, Shengelia joined the military of a newly independent Georgia, rising to take command of a marine battalion in 1997.
