Broder Knudtzon
Broder Lysholm Knudtzon (5 October 178820 March 1864) was a Norwegian merchant, politician and benefactor. Born into one of Trondheim's wealthiest mercantile families, he travelled to England where he developed a great admiration of English language and literature. Despite his commercial background he was more drawn towards the fields of politics, culture and art. He nevertheless administrated his father's family firm, acting as foreign correspondent with little interest in the everyday business. In England he befriended Lord Byron and came under the influence of the English national liberal movement. He bequeathed his entire library and several artworks to the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. Annelise Knudtzon
Annelise Caroline Knudtzon née Kiær (1914–2006) was a Norwegian textile artist. From 1946, she managed her own studio in Oslo where she and her employees produced brightly coloured hand-woven woolen fabrics, especially upholstery. In collaboration with the painter Knut Rumohr, she revived the old technique of using rye straw for weaving. Together they produced carpets with abstract designs based on nature. Knudtzon designed patterns for the Norwegian textile firm from 1958 to 1975. In 1984, she received the Jacob Prize, a Norwegian cultural award. Early life Born in Oslo on 25 October 1914, Anne-Lise Caroline Kiær was the daughter of the industrialist Thorvald (Thorry) Meyer Kiær (1888–1968) and his wife Ingrid née Thaulow (1892–1983). Hans Carl Knudtzon
Hans Carl Knudtzon (29 January 175116 December 1823) was a Norwegian merchant, ship-owner and politician. Born in the north of Germany to a mercantile family, he travelled to Trondheim, Norway, where he had success in the trading business. He was also successful within politics, acting as vice burgomaster and subsequently burgomaster of Trondheim. At the end of his life he was decorated with numerous orders. Jørgen Alexander Knudtzon
Jørgen Alexander Knudtzon (9 September 1854 – 7 January 1917) was a Norwegian linguist and historian. He was a professor of Semitic Languages at the University of Oslo from 1907. Knudtzon was born in Trondheim, the son of consul Hans Nicolay Knudtzon (1814–89) and his wife Catharina (1831–79) ''née'' Trampe. Having finished his secondary education in 1872, he enrolled at the Royal Frederick University in Christiania. After a short spell at the Cathedral School in Trondheim, he returned to Christiania to study Semitic languages, in particular Akkadian, Arabian and Hebrew, the last of which he also gave lectures on. His first scholarly contribution was ''Textkritische Bemerkungen zu Lay 17,18'', which was published in 1882. Jørgen Von Cappelen Knudtzon
Jørgen von Cappelen Knudtzon (28 April 178429 July 1854) was a Norwegian businessman and patron of the arts. Born in Trondheim to a prosperous mercantile family of German extraction, he travelled to Hamburg, Germany to study commerce. Upon his father's death, he inherited the family business, though his brother-in-law Lorentz Johannsen became its director. With the family firm's trade ships Knudtzon often travelled to foreign destinations in Southeast Asia. At one occasion the ship wrecked; in the subsequent tumult he made friends with the Scot Alexander Baillie, with whom he would later travel around Europe. His profound interest in art was expressed in his numerous donations to artists and his own art collection, which included both antiquities and contemporary artworks. The Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen made sculptures of Knudtzon and Baillie; as an expression of gratitude, Knudtzon advocated the creation of a museum dedicated to Thorvaldsen in Copenhagen. Nic Knudtzon
Nicolay Heinrich "Nic" Knudtzon (17 March 1922 – 7 February 2013) was a Norwegian telecommunications engineer. He graduated in electronic engineering from the Norwegian Institute of Technology in 1947. He was hired at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, and remained here for several years except for studies at the MIT in 1948. He worked with developing radio links; the first in Norway opened in 1954 between Oslo and Bergen. In 1955 he was hired at the newly established SHAPE Technical Centre as communications director. While working in the Netherlands he took a doctorate at the Delft University of Technology. In 1967 he was hired as director of the new Televerkets Forskningsinstitutt at Kjeller, the research establishment of the telecommunications monopolist Televerket. He remained so for 25 years.
