Knud Hertling
Knud Ludvig Johannes Hertling (7 January 1925 in Paamiut (Frederikshåb) – 26 October 2010) was a Greenlandic-Danish politician from the Social Democrats (Denmark), Social Democrats. He served as Minister for Greenland from 1971 to 1973 under prime ministers Jens Otto Krag and Anker Jørgensen. Hertling was a Greenlandic member of the Folketing from 1964 to 1973. He founded the party Sukaq in 1969, the first political party to be established in Greenland. His aim was to work for greater home rule for Greenland. Hertling was the first Greenlander to hold a ministerial post in the Danish government. Personal life Hertling was born in Paamiut, but was raised in Aasiaat. He and his brother Jørgen moved to Denmark in 1945 and were adopted by Danish pastor Svend Hertling in 1947. Hertling died in Fejø in October 2010 at the age of 85. Paamiut
Paamiut, formerly Frederikshåb, is a town in southwestern Greenland in the Sermersooq municipality. Geography Paamiut is located on the coast of Labrador Sea in the southern end of a small estuary called Kuannersooq ("Inlet"). History People have lived in the Paamiut area since around 1500 BC . Social Democrats (Denmark)
The Social Democrats ( da, Socialdemokraterne, ) is a social democratic political party in Denmark. A member of the Party of European Socialists (PES), the Social Democrats have 50 out of 179 members of the Danish parliament (following the latest Danish general election held in 2022), Folketing, and three out of fourteen MEPs elected from Denmark. Founded by Louis Pio in 1871, the party first entered the Folketing in the 1884 Danish Folketing election. By the early 20th century, it had become the party with the largest representation in the Folketing, a distinction it would hold for 77 years. It first formed a government after the 1924 Danish Folketing election under Thorvald Stauning, the longest-serving Danish Prime Minister of the 20th century. Jens Otto Krag
Jens Otto Krag (; 15 September 1914 – 22 June 1978) was a Danish politician who served as prime minister of Denmark from 1962 to 1968 and from 1971 to 1972, and as leader of the Social Democrats from 1962 to 1972. He was president of the Nordic Council in 1971. Early life and career Krag was born in Randers, Jutland, on 15 September 1914, into the impoverished family of a tobacconist. He attended the local gymnasium, and as a teenager joined the Social Democratic Youth of Denmark, the youth wing of the Social Democratic Party. In 1933, Krag began studying economics at the University of Copenhagen. During this period he emerged as an active journalist and teacher in the labour movement, and became acquainted with the leadership of the Social Democrats and the trade unions. Anker Jørgensen
Anker Henrik Jørgensen (13 July 1922 – 20 March 2016) was a Danish politician who served at various times as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Denmark. Between 1972 and 1982 he led five cabinets as Prime Minister. Jørgensen was President of the Nordic Council in 1986 and 1991. He led or represented the Social Democratic Party for well over 30 years. His legacy is ambivalent. Politically, he is considered by many right wing followers to have been largely unsuccessful, having failed to mitigate the impact of the economic crisis of the 1970s and 1980s. Nonetheless, he is generally respected and even loved throughout Denmark for his personal integrity and down-to-earth personality, often exemplified by his refusal to move into the official Prime Minister residence Marienborg, preferring to stay with his wife in their small apartment in a working class area of Copenhagen. Sukaq was a short-lived nationalist political party in Greenland. Aasiaat
Aasiaat () or Ausiait, formerly Egedesminde, is a town in the Qeqertalik municipality in western Greenland, located in the heart of Aasiaat Archipelago at the southern end of Disko Bay. With a population of 3,069 as of 2020, it is Greenland's fourth-largest town. Etymology In Greenlandic, Aasiaat means "Spiders" ( da, Edderkopper). The exact explanation for this is yet to be determined because of the lack of historical facts of the origin of the name. The most common assumption is that when the town was founded as a mere settlement, it was abundant with spiders. Alternatively it might be a relic of Inuit mythology, wherein spiders bring good luck. Like in the rest of Greenland, spiders are rarely seen in the town in modern times. Fejø
Fejø is a Danish island north of Lolland. It covers an area of and has 611 permanent inhabitants (1 January 2005). Its population expands in Summer since many Danes have summerhouses and there is an influx of other tourists. Fejø has two villages: ''Vesterby'' and ''Østerby'', connected by a single main road. Fejø has two main harbors, Vesterbyhavn and Dybvighavn. The island has a cafe, restaurant, shop, retirement home, church, primary school, mill, and a resident doctor. It has a windmill which was restored and started grinding corn for the first time in decades in June 2013.
