He is widely known for his role as Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife on ''The Andy Griffith Show'', a 1960s sitcom for which he earned five Emmy Awards. 	Gary Knotts Gary Everett Knotts (born February 12, 1977) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He attended Northwest Shoals Community College and was selected by the Florida Marlins in the eleventh round of the 1995 Major League Baseball draft. He made his major league debut for the Marlins in 2001 and was also with the club in 2002. On January 11, 2003, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers with pitchers Nate Robertson and Rob Henkel for pitchers Mark Redman and Jerrod Fuell.
