Knott County, Kentucky
Knott County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,251. Its county seat is Hindman. The county was formed in 1884 and is named for James Proctor Knott, Governor of Kentucky (1883–1887). It is a prohibition or dry county. Its county seat is home to the Hindman Settlement School, founded as America's first settlement school. The Knott County town of Pippa Passes is home to Alice Lloyd College. History Knott County was established in 1884 from land given by Breathitt, Floyd, Letcher, and Perry counties. The 1890s-era courthouse, the second to serve the county, burned in 1929. James Proctor Knott
James Proctor Knott (August 29, 1830 – June 18, 1911) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky and served as the 29th Governor of Kentucky from 1883 to 1887. Born in Kentucky, he moved to Missouri in 1850 and began his political career there. He served as Missouri Attorney General from 1859 to 1861, when he resigned rather than swear an oath of allegiance to the federal government just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. Knott was disbarred and briefly imprisoned for his refusal to take the oath of allegiance. He returned to Kentucky in 1863 and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1871, he made a notable speech ridiculing a bill to subsidize westward expansion of railroads. In the speech, he lampooned the remote town of Duluth, Minnesota. The Duluth speech was eventually reprinted in several publications and brought Knott national acclaim. Perry County is a county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,473. Its county seat is Hazard. The county was founded in 1820. Both the county and county seat are named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero in the War of 1812. History The area presently bounded by Kentucky state lines was a part of the U.S. State of Virginia, known as Kentucky County when the British colonies separated themselves in the American Revolutionary War. The June Buchanan School (JBS) is a private K-12 prep school located on the campus of Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It is named after founder June Buchanan, who, along with social reformer Alice Spencer Geddes Lloyd, founded the college. It has a student-teacher ratio of 10-1. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Even though JBS is located on the campus of Alice Lloyd College, it is a separate division of the Caney Creek Community Center, the non-profit organization that operates both institutions. Cordia School
Cordia School is one of two high schools located in Knott County, Kentucky. It serves students from Prekindergarten to 12th grade. History The school was established by Alice Slone from Caney Creek, Kentucky. Slone was sent to Cleveland, Ohio, by Alice Lloyd to receive her education. Slone returned to Kentucky to teach, and established the school in 1933. In early 2018, Kentucky Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt deemed the school unsafe, and a health and safety inspection revealed issues. Such as animal feces in the building, and structural cracks. Pruitt said that students and teachers must leave the building. Kentucky Department of Education officials came to a conclusion that the school shall not be occupied by the Knott County School District after February 2, 2018. Knott County Central High School
Knott County Central High School is a high school located in Hindman, Kentucky. It is home to the Knott County Central Patriots, who have claimed several regional titles in basketball, baseball, track, and other sports. History The school was founded in 1974 by a consolidation of three smaller county schools: Hindman High School, Carr Creek High School (both state basketball champions), and Knott County High School. This made the first graduating class, the class of 1975. At this time the school was not equipped with the space for a baseball team nor a football team. These extra-curricular activities came at a later time. The lower spot cleared off to the left of the school was only used to practice the marching band routines.
