Gary Knell
Gary Evan Knell (born 27 February 1954) was the Chairman of National Geographic Partners. Formerly, he was president and CEO of the National Geographic Society. He joined National Geographic as chief executive in January 2014. He has been a member of the Society's board of trustees since April 2013 and has served on the board of governors of the National Geographic Education Foundation since November 2003. From 2011 to 2013 he was president and CEO of National Public Radio NPR. Prior to that he served as CEO of Sesame Workshop from 2000–2011. Early life Knell graduated from Grant High School in Los Angeles, California, and earned a BA in political science from UCLA in 1975, followed by a law degree from Loyola Law School in L.A. in 1978. William Knell (actor)
William Knell (died June 13, 1587) was an Elizabethan era actor who played lead roles for the Queen's Men in the 1580s. It has been speculated that his sudden death in a brawl with another actor, while on tour in Thame near Oxford, gave William Shakespeare an opening to become a professional actor. Life Knell joined the Queen's Men in 1583. He seems to have quickly risen to play leading parts. He is known to have played the role of King Hevry V in the pre-Shakespeare play ''The Famous Victories of Henry V'', opposite Richard Tarlton who played the clown role (Dericke) in the play. A record of the event says that "Knel, then playing Henry the fift, hit Tarlton a sound boxe indeed, which made the people laugh the more". On 30 January 1586 he married the 15-year-old Rebecca Edwards (1561-1619). William Adolphus Knell
William Adolphus Knell (1801–1875) was a successful British maritime painter of the 19th century. Life Knell was born in 1801 at Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight. By 1825 had already exhibited his works at the Royal Academy. He soon built up a successful practice as a painter of maritime and particularly naval subjects, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy, British Institution and the Society of British Artists. He was particularly praised in 1847 for ''The Battle off Cape St. Vincent, 14 February 1797'', shown at Westminster Hall in 1847. It was purchased for the nation for £200 and is now part of the Parliamentary Art Collection. Reviewing Knell's ''Destruction of Toulon'', shown in the same exhibition, ''The Athenæum'' said: "It is more conspicuous in chiaroscuro treatment than most of the pictures here of its class ... a little less whiteness in the more intense portions of the fire would have given greater brilliancy. William Calcott Knell
William Calcott Knell (1830–1880) was a British painter of maritime subjects. Life He was the son of William Adolphus Knell (1801-1875), who also worked as a marine painter. The influence of his father is evident in the composition and execution of his motifs. However, Knell was also inspired by other contemporaries. He painted mainly coastal scenes with boats. With great skill, Knell managed to capture the changing ambiances of the day and render his impressions of nature. Phil Knell
Philip Louis Knell (March 12, 1865 – June 5, 1944) was an American Major League Baseball pitcher between 1888 and 1895. He broke into the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Alleghenys at the age of 23. Knell finished his career with a 79–90 record and 4.05 earned run average. Despite having a relatively short MLB career, Knell still remains #35 on the list of Major League Baseball career hit batsmen leaders. In a 1910 interview, slugger Ping Bodie acknowledged Knell as his first baseball mentor. Eric Knell
Eric Henry Knell (1 April 1903 – January 1987) was the Bishop of Reading from 1954 until 1972. Knell was educated at Trinity College, Oxford and ordained in 1929. Beginning his ministry with a curacy at ''St Barnabas, Southfields'' he was successively: Domestic Chaplain to the Bishop of Lincoln; Priest in charge of the ''Trinity College, Oxford, Mission'' in Stratford; Vicar of ''Emmanuel, Forest Gate'', then ''Christ Church, Reading''; and finally, before his appointment to the episcopate, Archdeacon of Berkshire.
