Carl Linnaeus
Carl Linnaeus (; 23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), also known after his ennoblement in 1761 as Carl von Linné Blunt (2004), p. 171. (), was a Swedish botanist, zoologist, taxonomist, and physician who formalised binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms. He is known as the "father of modern taxonomy". Many of his writings were in Latin; his name is rendered in Latin as and, after his 1761 ennoblement, as . Linnaeus was born in Råshult, the countryside of Småland, in southern Sweden. He received most of his higher education at Uppsala University and began giving lectures in botany there in 1730. He lived abroad between 1735 and 1738, where he studied and also published the first edition of his ' in the Netherlands. He then returned to Sweden where he became professor of medicine and botany at Uppsala. In the 1740s, he was sent on several journeys through Sweden to find and classify plants and animals. In the 1750s and 1760s, he continued to collect an ...

Caprifoliaceae
The Caprifoliaceae or honeysuckle family is a clade of dicotyledonous flowering plants consisting of about 860 species, in 33, to 42 genera, with a nearly cosmopolitan distribution. Centres of diversity are found in eastern North America and eastern Asia, while they are absent in tropical and southern Africa. Description The flowering plants in this clade are mostly shrubs and vines: rarely herbs. They include some ornamental garden plants grown in temperate regions. The leaves are mostly opposite with no stipules (appendages at the base of a leafstalk or petiole), and may be either evergreen or deciduous. The flowers are tubular funnel-shaped or bell-like, usually with five outward spreading lobes or points, and are often fragrant. They usually form a small calyx with small bracts. The fruit is in most cases a berry or a drupe. The genera ''Diervilla'' and ''Weigela'' have capsular fruit, while ''Heptacodium'' has an achene. Taxonomy Views of the family-level classification ...

Scabiosa
''Scabiosa'' is a genus in the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae) of flowering plants. Many of the species in this genus have common names that include the word scabious, but some plants commonly known as scabious are currently classified in related genera such as ''Knautia'' and '' Succisa''; at least some of these were formerly placed in ''Scabiosa''. Another common name for members of this genus is pincushion flowers. Etymology The common name 'scabious' comes the Latin word ''scabiosus'' meaning 'mangy, rough or itchy' which refers to the herb's traditional usage as a folk medicine to treat scabies, an illness that causes a severe itching sensation. Description Some species of ''Scabiosa'' are annuals, others perennials. Some are herbaceous plants; others have woody rootstocks. The leaves of most species are somewhat hairy and partly divided into lobes, but a few are smooth and some species have simple leaves. The flowers are borne on inflorescences in the form of heads ...

Christian Knaut
Christian Knaut (August 16, 1656 – April 11, 1716) was a German physician, botanist and librarian born in Halle an der Saale. His older brother, Christoph Knaut (1638–1694) was also a physician and botanist. He studied medicine at the University of Leipzig, where he had as instructors Gottfried Welsch, Paul Amman, Michael Ettmüller and Johannes Bohn. In 1682 he obtained his doctorate from the University of Jena with a dissertation titled ''De fermentatione in sanguine non existente''. Afterwards he returned to Halle, where he served as a librarian and personal physician to Prince Emanuel Lebrecht of Anhalt-Köthen. As a librarian he was the author of a chronicle and description involving the counties of Ballenstädt and Aschersleben (1698). As a botanist he published ''Compendium Botanicum sive Methodus plantarum genuina'', in which he provided a classification system for flowering plants based on petal number and arrangement. Carolus Linnaeus named the plant genus ''Kn ...

Knautia Arvensis
''Knautia arvensis'', commonly known as field scabious, is a herbaceous perennial species of flowering plant in the honeysuckle family Caprifoliaceae. Description It is a perennial plant that grows between . It prefers grassy places and dry soils, avoiding heavy soils, and flowers between July and September. The flowers are borne on inflorescences in the form of heads; each head contains many small florets. The head is flatter than in similar species, such as devil's bit scabious (''Succisa pratensis'') and small scabious (''Scabiosa columbaria''). There are 4 stamens in each floret, and 1 notched long stigma. The fruit is nut like, cylindrical and hairy, in size. It has a tap root. The stem has long stiff hairs angled downwards. The leaves form a basal rosette, are paired on the stem, the lowest typically long, spear shaped, whereas the upper are smaller. There are no stipules. Ecology It is occasionally used by the marsh fritillary as a foodplant instead of its usual ...

Knautia Drymeia
''Knautia drymeia'', commonly known as the Hungarian widow flower, is a herbaceous perennial plant species in the family Caprifoliaceae, that grows in Central and Southeastern Europe. Taxonomy This species was first formally described by Austrian botanist Johann Heuffel in his work ''Flora 39'' in 1856. There are a few recognized subspecies of ''Knautia drymeia'': * ''Knautia drymeia'' subsp. ''centrifrons'' (Borbás) Ehrend. * ''Knautia drymeia'' subsp. ''drymeia'' * ''Knautia drymeia'' subsp. ''intermedia'' (Pernh. & Wettst.) Ehrend. * ''Knautia drymeia'' subsp. ''nympharum'' (Boiss. & Heldr.) Ehrend. * ''Knautia drymeia'' subsp. ''tergestina'' (Beck) Ehrend. Description This upright-growing perennial widow flower can reach from 40 to 60 centimetres of height and is easily recognizable because of its leaf rosette, that gives rise to multiple flowering stems. The species's stem is hirsute, with leaves growing along the entire length. Its oppositely arranged simple and ...
