Kleopatra (opera)
''Kleopatra'' is a Danish-language opera by August Enna to a libretto by Einar Christiansen based on the 1889 novel by H. Rider Haggard. The opera premiered in the Royal Theatre in 1895 and was performed around 20 times. In German translation, the opera was performed in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Wroclaw, Riga, Zurich, Antwerp, Rotterdam and The Hague; In 1897, the opera ran for 50 performances in the opera house in Amsterdam. Plot The opera tells the story of Prince Harmaki, who enters Queen Cleopatra's palace in order to murder her. His objective is regain power from the Romans. August Enna
August Enna (13 May 1859 – 3 August 1939) was a Danish composer, known mainly for his operas. Enna was born in Nakskov, Lolland, Denmark, but his ethnic origins lay in Sicily. His first major success as a composer was ''The Witch'' (1892), which was followed by several popular operas, songs, two symphonies (in D minor and E major), and a violin concerto. Strongly influenced by Wagner's music, he was himself an influence on Danish composers, such as Carl Nielsen. August Enna also wrote piano music. Einar Christiansen
Arne Einar Christiansen (20 July 1861 – 25 September 1939) was a Danish journalist, critic and titular professor. He was best known as a writer and theatre director. He was born in Copenhagen, the son of Captain Eduard Christiansen and Karen Margrethe White. He graduated from the Metropolitan School in 1878 and studied theology at the University of Copenhagen graduating with his degree in 1886. He was editor of the journal ' (''Illustrated Times'') from 1892 to 1899. From 1899 to 1909 Christiansen was the artistic director of the Royal Danish Theatre and orchestra. Elsa Dreisig
Elsa Dreisig (born 1991) is a French-Danish operatic soprano. Based at the Berlin State Opera, she made a European career in both opera and concert. Her opera roles include, besides the standard lyric soprano repertoire such as Mozart's Fiordiligi and Bizet's Micaëla, Baroque opera such as Rameau's ''Hippolyte et Aricie'', and the world premiere of Beat Furrer's ''Violetter Schnee''. Life Training Dreisig was born in Paris, the daughter of the Danish opera singer and the French singer, conductor and director Gilles Ramade. She sang in the children's choirs of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie and the Opéra National de Lyon. She studied singing with Valérie Guillorit at the Conservatoire de Paris, and at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig with Regina Werner-Dietrich. Odense Symphony Orchestra
The Odense Symphony Orchestra (Odense Symfoniorkester) is a Danish symphony orchestra based in Odense. The orchestra is resident in the Odense Concert Hall (inaugurated in 1982), specifically in the Carl Nielsen Hall (seating capacity of 1,212). Since 2007, its chief executive is Finn Schumacker. History The precursor roots of the orchestra date to the early 19th century. The orchestra was established under its current name in 1946. The orchestra initially began with 23 musicians, as a theatre orchestra. The current orchestra numbers on the order of 73 permanent musicians and a high level of activity. Den Jyske Opera, also known as the Danish National Opera, is based in Aarhus, Denmark. Established in 1947, it's Denmark's largest touring opera company, and the second only to the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen. Description Founded in Aarhus in 1947, the company staged two operas a year until 1977. It then collaborated with five provincial orchestras, staging some 100 performances per season. Philipp Kochheim
Philipp Kochheim (born 4 December 1970) is a German theatre director, author and scenic designer. He also wrote the libretto for the opera ''Kniefall von Warschau'' named after Willy Brandt's genuflexion in Warsaw on 7 December 1970, with music by Gerhard Rosenfeld, which premiered in 1997 in the Opernhaus Dortmund, directed by John Dew. Life Born in Hamburg, Kochheim began playing the piano at the age of 7. As a teenager he attended productions of Peter Zadek, which aroused his interest in theatre. He studied art history in Munich, with the minor subjects and theatre studies. In the season 1992/93 he attended a performance of Verdi's ''Un ballo in maschera'' and afterwards turned his attention increasingly to music theatre. Opera is a form of theatre in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers.
