Bad Manners
Bad Manners are an English two-tone and ska band led by frontman Buster Bloodvessel. Early appearances included ''Top of the Pops'' and the live film documentary, ''Dance Craze'' (1981). They were at their most popular during the early 1980s, during a period when other ska revival bands such as Madness, the Specials and the Selecter filled the charts. Bad Manners spent 111 weeks in the UK Singles Chart between 1980 and 1983, and they also achieved chart success with their first four studio albums with ''Ska 'n' B'' (1980), ''Loonee Tunes!'' (1980), and '' Gosh It's ... Bad Manners'' (1981) being their biggest hits. Formation Fronted by Buster Bloodvessel (real name Douglas Trendle), the band was formed in 1976 while the members were together at Woodberry Down Comprehensive School near Manor House, North London. MCA Records
MCA Records was an American record label owned by MCA Inc., which later became part of Universal Music Group. Pre-history MCA Inc., a powerful talent agency and a television production company, entered the recorded music business in 1962 with the purchase of the New York-based US Decca Records (established in 1934), including Coral Records and Brunswick Records. MCA was forced to exit the talent agency business in order to complete the merger. Special Brew (song)
"Special Brew" is a song by British 2-tone and ska band Bad Manners, released in September 1980 and was the third single from their first album ''Ska 'n' B''. It was the band's joint biggest hit in the UK, reaching number 3 in the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for two weeks. The song takes its inspiration from the Carlsberg lager Special Brew and is about someone who loves it like a significant other. After the success of " Ne-Ne Na-Na Na-Na Nu-Nu", the band realised they needed to write more songs and so went to the local off-licence for inspiration. One of the ideas sounded "a bit soppy... a bit of a long song" to Buster Bloodvessel, which was not their style, so he picked up his beer and sang "I love you, yes i do 'cause i know that you're my special brew" and the song was then written in a matter of minutes. The B-side song "Ivor The Engine" is named after the eponymous television series and was included on their second album ''Loonee Tunes!'', titled "The Undersea A ... "Lip Up Fatty" is a single released by British 2 Tone and ska band Bad Manners in June 1980, which reached No. 15 in the UK Singles Chart. It is one of a number of songs by Bad Manners about 'being fat', (a reference to the round figure of frontman, Buster Bloodvessel). According to Bloodvessel "Lip Up Fatty" was an expression used at his school "to tell people to shut up". Its signature melodic lines were a simple but careful blend of brass instruments and lead harmonica theme, played by Alan Sayag (Winston Bazoomies). During early live gigs and in the film Dance Craze, Alan Sayag sometimes played the harmonica part on a Hohner Echo Tremolo instrument. Harmonica player David Turner took up the instrument as a result of hearing the song in early 1980 and credits the melody line as the first tune he ever taught himself.
