Klagetoh (Leegito) Chapter House
The Klagetoh (Leeyi´ tó) Chapter House is a historic chapter house of the Navajo Nation in Klagetoh, Arizona. The landmark building is significant for its association with Annie Dodge Wauneka (1910–1997), a leading figure in local chapter and Navajo Nation affairs and role model for women's involvement Navajo affairs. Built in 1963, it is one of the few surviving permanent structures associated with Wauneka's life. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2021, and continues to serve the area community as a meeting place. Description and history The Klagetoh Chapter House is located in the small community of Klagetoh, roughly midway between Ganado and Chambers on United States Route 191. Klagetoh, Arizona
Klagetoh is a census-designated place (CDP) in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 242 at the 2010 census. History Missionaries transcribed “Łeeyi’ tó” as Klagetoh. “Łeeyi’ tó” translates as underground water which is now an abandoned well. It was the first well to be developed and used by the community. The abandoned well is located approximately ⅛ of a mile east of the Red Mesa Store. The people who pioneered Klagetoh itself are not remembered, at least by name. The Anasazi had a thriving settlement here once, perhaps with almost as many residents as the 6,000-person chapter boasts today. Rug Navajo rugs from the Klagetoh area are among the most popular because of their bold clear cut designs. A Chapter is the most local form of government on the Navajo Nation. The Nation is broken into five agencies. Each agency contains chapters; currently there are 110 local chapters, each with their own chapter house. Chapters are semi-self autonomous, being able to decide most matters which concern their own chapter. The Navajo Nation ( nv, Naabeehó Bináhásdzo), also known as Navajoland, is a Native American reservation in the United States. Annie Dodge Wauneka
Annie Dodge Wauneka (April 11, 1910 – November 10, 1997) was an influential member of the Navajo Nation as member of the Navajo Nation Council. As a member and three term head of the council's Health and Welfare Committee, she worked to improve the health and education of the Navajo. Wauneka is widely known for her countless efforts to improve health on the Navajo Nation, focusing mostly on the eradication of tuberculosis within her nation. She also authored a dictionary, in which translated English medical terms into the Navajo language. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963 by Lyndon B. Johnson as well as the Indian Council Fire Achievement Award and the Navajo Medal of Honor. She also received an honorary doctorate in Humanities (public health) from the University of New Mexico. Ganado ( nv, ) is a chapter of the Navajo Nation and census-designated place (CDP) in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,210 at the 2010 census. Ganado is part of the Fort Defiance Agency, of the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and is the delegate seat for the district that encompasses the Jeddito, Cornfields, Ganado, Kinlichee, Steamboat communities at the Navajo Nation Council. Chambers is an unincorporated community in Apache County, Arizona, United States. Chambers is located at the junction of Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 191, northeast of Holbrook. Chambers has a post office with ZIP code 86502. History Chambers was named after Edward Chambers, Vice President of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad system. Chambers was responsible for opening the town's first post office in 1907. United States Route 191
U.S. Route 191 (US 191) is a spur of U.S. Route 91 that has two branches. The southern branch runs for from Douglas, Arizona on the Mexican border to the southern part of Yellowstone National Park. The northern branch runs for from the northern part of Yellowstone National Park to Loring, Montana, at the Canada–US border. Unnumbered roads within Yellowstone National Park connect the two branches. The highway passes through the states of Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. The highway was designated in 1926 and its routing has changed drastically through the years. The modern US 191 bears almost no resemblance to the original route, which was primarily in the state of Idaho. Most of the current route of US 191 was formed in 1981.
