Kiyoshi Sasabe
Kiyoshi Sasabe (佐々部清) (January 8, 1958 – March 31, 2020) was a Japanese film director. Career Born in Shimonoseki, Sasabe graduated from Meiji University before attending the Yokohama Hōsō Eiga Senmon Gakuin (now the Japan Academy of Moving Images). He worked as an assistant director to Yōichi Sai, Seiji Izumi, and Yasuo Furuhata before debuting as a director in 2002 with ''Hi wa mata noboru''. He received the Directors Guild of Japan New Directors Award for '' Chirusoku no natsu'' in 2003. His ''Half a Confession'' won the best picture award at the 28th Japan Academy Prize. He also directed TV movies. Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi
is a city located in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. With a population of 265,684, it is the largest city in Yamaguchi Prefecture and the fifth-largest city in the Chūgoku region. It is located at the southwestern tip of Honshu facing the Tsushima Strait at the entrance to the Kanmon Straits (also known as the Straits of Shimonoseki) across from the city of Kitakyushu and the island of Kyushu. It is nicknamed the " Fugu Capital" for the locally caught pufferfish, and is the largest harvester of the pufferfish in Japan. Town Of Evening Calm, Country Of Cherry Blossoms
is a one-volume manga written and illustrated by Fumiyo Kōno. The two connected stories were first published in Japan by Futabasha in ''Weekly Manga Action'' in 2003 and 2004, then collected in a single ''tankōbon'' volume in 2004. The story is about a family of survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The author based the characters on people who were in Hiroshima or Nagasaki. ''Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms'' was adapted as a live-action film directed by Kiyoshi Sasabe released in 2007, called ''Yunagi City, Sakura Country'' in English. It has also been adapted as a novel by Kei Kunii and as a radio drama produced in 2006. Half A Confession
is a 2004 Japanese film directed by Kiyoshi Sasabe. It was chosen as Best Film at the Japan Academy Prize ceremony. Summary Respected inspector Soichiro Kaji is imprisoned for killing his wife, Keiko, who, suffering from Alzheimer's disease, requested it. His colleagues at Tokyo Police Force discover that Kaji intended to commit suicide after killing her, but instead went away on a bullet train two days later. A suspicious item is found in his coat pocket that suggests Kaji was unfaithful. The incident makes headlines in Tokyo, where a young female reporter sets out to find the truth about the acclaimed yet intriguingly silent defendant. Directors Guild Of Japan New Directors Award
The is given annually by the Directors Guild of Japan to a new director of a film released that year who is considered the most "suitable" for the award. The winner is selected by a committee formed of DGJ members. All formats—feature film, documentary, television, video, etc.—are eligible for consideration. In some years when there was no apparent winner, the Guild only issued a "citation" () or did not give out the award. Multiple awards have been given in other years.
