Kit Hiller
Kit (Christine) Hiller is a Tasmanian artist, now working principally in the mediums of linocut print and oil painting. She is a three-time winner of the Portia Geach Memorial Award, a portraiture prize for Australian women artists, and has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize for Portraiture five times. Hiller is widely known for her vividly coloured linocut prints of nature subjects, particularly flora and birds. She also paints large-scale portraits and landscapes of North-West Tasmania, where she lives. Biography Hiller was born in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1948 and trained at the Tasmanian School of Art from 1966-69. She was an art teacher from 1970–72 and has been an exhibiting artist since 1979. Portia Geach Memorial Award
The Portia Geach Memorial Award is an annual prize for Australian female portraitists. The Award was established in 1961 as a testamentary trust by Florence Kate Geach, sister of Australian painter Portia Geach, with an initial endowment of AU£12,000. The first prize given under the aegis of the Award was made in 1965, comprising a £1,000 prize to Jean Appleton for a self-portrait. In 2015, the Award was worth A$30,000. The Award aims to support female artists working in the field of portraits painted from life, and is given based upon the field entries submitted to the Award. Archibald Prize
The Archibald Prize is an Australian portraiture art prize for painting, generally seen as the most prestigious portrait prize in Australia. It was first awarded in 1921 after the receipt of a bequest from J. F. Archibald, J. F. Archibald, the editor of ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'' who died in 1919. It is administered by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and awarded for "the best portrait, preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics, painted by an artist resident in Australia during the twelve months preceding the date fixed by the trustees for sending in the pictures". Hobart ( ; Nuennonne/Palawa kani: ''nipaluna'') is the capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) is a museum located in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. The QVMAG is the largest museum in Australia not located in a capital city. History The foundation stone for the original building to house the Victoria Museum and Art Gallery was laid by the Mayor of Launceston, Robert Carter, on 21 June 1887. Alexander Morton, of the museum in Hobart, acted as honorary curator from its opening in 1891 until 1896, with Herbert Hedley Scott assuming the role of curator in May 1897. In 1926 the Launceston City Council amended the name to Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery to avoid confusion with the state of Victoria. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is a museum located in Hobart, Tasmania. The museum was established in 1846, by the Royal Society of Tasmania, the oldest Royal Society outside England. The TMAG receives 400,000 visitors annually. History The museum was officially created in 1848, though the collections it housed were much created earlier. It merged a number of disparate collections, including that of the Royal Society of Tasmania.
