Kirstie James
Kirstie Klingenberg (née James, born 25 May 1989) is a New Zealand track cyclist and former rower. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Women's sprint, and Women's team pursuit. She was a competitor in the women's team pursuit event at the 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, where she won a bronze medal. Kirstie competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games where she won silver in the team pursuit. Klingenberg started in rowing but switched to cycling in 2012. She was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2016, and is an ambassador for Endometriosis New Zealand. Track Cycling
Track cycling is a bicycle racing sport usually held on specially built banked tracks or velodromes using purpose-designed track bicycles. History Track cycling has been around since at least 1870. When track cycling was in its infancy, it was held on velodromes similar to the ones used today. These velodromes consisted of two straights and slightly banked turns, though they varied more in length and material than the modern 250m track. One appeal of indoor track racing was that spectators could be easily controlled, and hence an entrance fee could be charged, making track racing a lucrative sport. Early track races attracted crowds of up to 2,000 people. Indoor tracks also enabled year-round cycling for the first time. The main early centers for track racing in Britain were Birmingham, Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester and London. UCI Track Cycling World Cup
The UCI Track Cycling World Cup (formerly known as the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics) is a multi race tournament held over a track cycling season - usually between October and February. Each series is divided into several rounds, each held in a different country. Format The UCI Track Cycling World Cup is a key event within the Track Cycling calendar, with only the World Championships and the Olympic Games attracting more World Ranking points. The series is open to national teams and registered trade teams who compete over a number of track cycling disciplines. The overall classification is decided on a points system with riders or teams amassing points in each discipline competed during each round of the series. Michaela Drummond
Michaela Drummond (born 5 April 1998) is a New Zealand professional track and road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's Continental Team . She won bronze medals in the team pursuit at the 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships and 2019 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Jaime Nielsen
Jaime Nielsen (born 3 September 1985) is a New Zealand track and road cyclist, and a former representative rower. Career From 2003 to 2007, Nielsen competed with the national rowing team. She became world champion at the World Rowing U23 Championships in Poznań, Poland, in 2004 with the U23 women's quadruple sculls with fellow members Bess Halley, Darnelle Timbs and Fiona Paterson. Despite only taking up cycling in 2007, at the team pursuit at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships she won silver in 2009 and bronze in 2011. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's team pursuit for the New Zealand team which placed 5th and set a national record of 3:18.514. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she finished 4th in the Women's team pursuit. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, she finished eighth, in Women's team pursuit. Rushlee Buchanan
Rushlee Buchanan (born 20 January 1988) is a New Zealand track and road cyclist. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Women's madison, and Women's team pursuit. Career She won bronze at the 2010 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in the Team Pursuit. She competed in the scratch, points and road races at both the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games. She has won the women's New Zealand road race championships a record four times, in 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2017. She won the New Zealand time trial championships in 2016. Racquel Sheath
Racquel Sheath (born 27 November 1994) is a retired New Zealand Track cycling, track and road cyclist. She represented her nation at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Sheath competed for the New Zealand team in the Cycling at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's team pursuit, women's team pursuit at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. There, she delivered the quartet of Lauren Ellis (cyclist), Lauren Ellis, Jaime Nielsen, and Rushlee Buchanan a New Zealand record of 4:17.592 to ensure the team's spot in the medal race, before narrowly losing the face-off to their Canadian rivals (4:18.459) for the bronze by a 3.8-second margin. Team Pursuit
The team pursuit is a track cycling event similar to the individual pursuit, except that two teams, each of up to four riders, compete, starting on opposite sides of the velodrome. Race format Both men's and women's events are competed over a distance of 4 km, by a team of 4 riders. Prior to the start of the 2012–13 season the women's event was competed over a distance of 3 km, by a team of 3 riders. As with the individual pursuit, the objective is to cover the distance in the fastest time or to catch and overtake the other team in a final. Riders in a team follow each other closely in line, drafting to minimize total drag, and periodically the lead rider (who works the hardest) peels off the front, swings up the track banking and rejoins the team at the rear. Bryony Botha
Bryony Botha (born 4 November 1997) is a New Zealand road and track cyclist. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Women's team pursuit. Career Botha was raised in Auckland, New Zealand and attended Rangitoto College. In 2015, Botha was part of the team pursuit that won the event, and broke the world team pursuit record, at the Junior Track World Championship. In 2017 Botha represented New Zealand at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships where she won the team pursuit and scratch race. Later in the year Botha also competed at the Chile Track Cycling World Cup, winning gold in the women's team pursuit. She represented New Zealand at the 2018 Commonwealth Games claiming silver in the team pursuit. Botha also won bronze in the team pursuit at the 2019 Track Cycling World Championships in Poland.
