Kirkwood Township is one of the sixteen townships of Belmont County, Ohio, United States. The 2010 census found 400 people in the township. Geography Located in the western part of the county, it borders the following townships: * Flushing Township - north * Union Township - east * Goshen Township - southeast * Warren Township - south * Oxford Township, Guernsey County - southwest * Londonderry Township, Guernsey County - northwest Part of the village of Fairview is located in southwestern Kirkwood Township. The Egypt Valley Wildlife Area comprises a significant portion of the township. Name and history Kirkwood Township was named for Robert Kirkwood, a soldier who fought in the American Revolutionary War. It is the only Kirkwood Township statewide. Robert Kirkwood
Robert Henry Kirkwood (1756November 4, 1791) was a United States officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War and the Northwest Indian War. He died in 1791 during the battle of St. Clair's Defeat. Early life Kirkwood was born in 1756 in Newark, Delaware, in what was then the Delaware Colony. He was the only son of nine children born to Robert Kirkwood, who was born in Ireland, and Sarah ( née McDowell) Kirkwood. Kirkwood studied religion at the Newark Academy (later renamed the University of Delaware). Revolutionary War He was named a lieutenant of the 1st Delaware Regiment in the Continental Army on 9 December 1775. Egypt Valley Wildlife Area
The Egypt Valley Wildlife Area is a former surface mining area in northwestern Belmont County Ohio, United States. Since the mid-1990s, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has administered the area. For many years, local residents have fished, hunted, camped and explored the high walls, backwaters, and graveyards that make up this area. People, to a lesser extent, call the area Egypt Bottom. Fairview is a village in Belmont and Guernsey counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 67 as of the 2020 census. It is part of the Wheeling metropolitan area.
