Kinston High School is a high school located in Kinston, North Carolina, United States. Kinston High was built in 1970 as an integrated high school to serve the city. The International Baccalaureate program started at Kinston High during the 2003–2004 school year. In fall 2004, Kinston High School was the first school in Lenoir County to start up a program called Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). This program began in California and from there it went around the world. Kinston High School graduated the first AVID class of Lenoir County in 2008 with 25 students receiving AVID diplomas. Kinston is a city in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States, with a population of 21,677 as of the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Lenoir County since its formation in 1791. Kinston is located in the coastal plains region of eastern North Carolina. In 2009, Kinston won the All-America City Award. This marks the second time in 21 years the city has won the title. History Early history At the time of English settlement, the area was inhabited by the Neusiok people. Preceding the historic tribe, indigenous peoples of a variety of cultures had lived in the area for thousands of years. Michael Jerome Jenkins (born September 6, 1986) is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for Winthrop University. College career In his four-year career at Winthrop, Jenkins played 131 games (70 starts) while averaging 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 22.6 minutes per game. As a senior, he led the Eagles to their fourth straight conference title and was named the 2008 Big South tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring 33 points to return the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament. Jerry Darnell Stackhouse (born November 5, 1974) is an American basketball coach and former professional player who is the head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores men's team. He played 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and was a two-time NBA All-Star.
