Kinney Heights, Los Angeles
Kinney Heights is a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, bounded by Arlington, 23rd, Adams, and Hermosa (originally Gramercy Place), just south of Interstate 10. Kinney Heights is a subdistrict of the West Adams district of South Los Angeles, California; Curbed also associates it with Jefferson Park. Before it was subdivided the land was owned by General Hanford Gordon Lennox. The area was developed in 1899 by developer Abbot Kinney, for whom it is named. It was a suburban tract of large Craftsman style homes at what was then the western edge of Los Angeles. The homes featured amenities like "beveled-glass china cabinets, marble fireplaces and mahogany floors". It was accessible to downtown via streetcar and attracted upper-middle-class families. American Craftsman
American Craftsman is an American domestic architectural style, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which included interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts, beginning in the last years of the 19th century. Its immediate ancestors in American architecture are the Shingle style architecture, Shingle style, which began the move away from Victorian ornamentation toward simpler forms; and the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The name "Craftsman" was appropriated from furniture-maker Gustav Stickley, whose magazine ''The Craftsman'' was first published in 1901. The architectural style was most widely used in small-to-medium-sized Southern California single-family homes from about 1905, so that the smaller-scale Craftsman style became known alternatively as " California bungalow". West Adams Terrace Historic Preservation Overlay Zone
West Adams Terrace is a neighborhood in Los Angeles. Dating back to 1905, it contains seven Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments, one property on the National Register of Historic Places and one Green Book property. In 2003, the neighborhood was designated a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. History The earliest mention of West Adams Terrace in the ''Los Angeles Times'' was on July 16, 1905. It describes the area as a "beautiful residence subdivision" with lots being sold for $40,000. Sold by the Mesa Land Company, the community is noted as the "last piece of high ground on Adams Street". During the next few years, the ''Times'' continued to report sales in the neighborhood. Abbot Kinney
Abbot Kinney (November 16, 1850 in New Brunswick, New Jersey – November 4, 1920 in Santa Monica, California) was an American developer, conservationist, water supply expert and tree expert. Kinney is best known for his " Venice of America" development in Los Angeles. Early life Kinney's family moved to Washington, D.C., and became known in politics. His aunt's husband was Senator James Dixon of Connecticut. At the age of 16, the Kinney went to Europe, where he studied in Heidelberg, Paris and Zürich and became fluent in six languages. A walking tour of Italy took him to Venice and the Italian Riviera. Returning to Washington in 1869 he joined the Maryland National Guard and in 1873 was able to join a U.S. Geological Survey team to map the Sioux reservations of the Dakotas.
