Kingston-On-Murray
Kingston On Murray (formerly Thurk and Kingston O.M.) is a town on the south bank of the Murray River in the Riverland region of South Australia. Its name is ultimately derived from Charles Kingston who was Premier of South Australia from 1893 to 1899. At the 2006 census, the town had a population of 257. History The town was surveyed in January 1915 and originally proclaimed as ''Thurk'' on 21 November 1918. Its size was reduced on 19 July 1934 and again on 13 July 1939. The name was derived from Thurk Homestead where the word ''Thurk'' is itself derived from an aboriginal word ''tharko'' that means ''the mouth''. The town's name was changed from ''Thurk'' to ''Kingston O.M.'' on 19 September 1940. The name was derived from the Kingston Village Settlement Area, a settlement which was established in 1896 and whose name is derived from Charles Kingston, the then Premier of South Australia. Village Settlements (South Australia)
The Village Settlements were communes set up by the South Australian government under Part VII of the ''Crown Lands Amendment Act 1893'', a scheme intended to mitigate the effects of the depression that was affecting the Colony. It followed the New Zealand V''illage Settlements Act'' and similar schemes in Canada and New South Wales, and concurrently with Victoria. It followed the " blockers" scheme espoused by George W. Cotton. Thirteen settlements were surveyed: Lyrup, Pyap, Kingston, Waikerie, Moorook, Ramco, Holder, Murtho, New Residence, Gillen, New Era and Charleston-on-Murray all on the River Murray, Mount Remarkable in the Mid North, and Nangkita to the south of Adelaide. Banrock Station Wetlands
Banrock Station Wetland Complex is a wetland complex located in South Australia which has been recognised as being of international importance by designation under the Ramsar Convention. It was listed on 21 October 2002 as Ramsar site 1221. It lies in the Riverland region of south-eastern South Australia and is adjacent to the Murray River. Kingston Estate
Kingston Estate was established in 1979 by Sarantos and Constantina Moularadellis, when they planted 40 acres of vines in South Australia's Riverland.
