Alexander William Kinglake
Alexander William Kinglake (5 August 1809 – 2 January 1891) was an English travel writer and historian. He was born near Taunton, Somerset, and educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the Bar in 1837, and built up a thriving legal practice, which, in 1856, he abandoned to devote himself to literature and public life. His first literary venture was ''Eothen; or Traces of travel brought home from the East'' (London: J. Ollivier, 1844), a very popular work of Eastern travel, apparently first published anonymously, in which he described a journey he made about ten years earlier in Syria, Palestine and Egypt, together with his Eton contemporary Lord Pollington. Elliot Warburton said it evoked "the East itself in vital actual reality" and it was instantly successful. John Alexander Kinglake
John Alexander Kinglake (25 June 1802 – 9 July 1870) was an English barrister and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1857 to 1870. Kinglake was at born at Chilton-on-Polden, the son of Robert Kinglake MD of Taunton and his wife Joanna Apperly, daughter of Anthony Apperly of Herefordshire. He was educated at Eton College and at Trinity College, Cambridge graduating BA in 1826 and MA in 1830. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1830. In 1844 he was made a Serjeant-at-Law. He was Recorder of Exeter in 1849 and became Recorder of Bristol in 1856. He was a barrister on the western Circuit and was a Deputy Lieutenant and J.P. for Somerset. Kinglake stood unsuccessfully for parliament at Wells in July 1852 and in 1855. At the 1857 general election he was elected Member of Parliament for Rochester. Robert Kinglake
Robert Alexander Kinglake (9 June 1843 – 10 June 1915) was an English rower and barrister. Kinglake was born at Taunton. He was the second son of John Alexander Kinglake, MP for Rochester, and his wife Louisa Rebecca Liddon, daughter of John Liddon of Taunton. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Kinglake rowed in the Cambridge boat in the Boat Races of 1863, 1864, 1865 and 1866, all of which were won by Oxford. He was president of Cambridge University Boat Club in 1866. In 1864 he won the Silver Goblets at Henley Royal Regatta partnering John Richardson Selwyn. Kinglake was admitted at the Inner Temple in November 1865 and was called to the bar on 17 November 1868. He was on the Western Circuit, and was Recorder of Penzance from 1883 to 1899 and of Bournemouth from 1899 to 1915. Kinglake later lived at Moushill Manor, Milford, Surrey. Robert Kinglake (physician)
Robert Kinglake M.D. (1765–1842) was an English physician, known as a medical writer. Life Kinglake graduated M.D. at the university of Göttingen, and also studied at the university of Edinburgh. After practising for some years as a surgeon at Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, he moved to Chilton-upon-Polden in Somerset, and in 1802 to Taunton. At this period Kinglake worked part-time for the Pneumatic Institution. At Taunton Kinglake attended public meetings and made speeches in support of the first Reform Bill. He died on 26 September 1842 at West Monkton rectory, near Taunton, the home of his son W. C. Kinglake. He was a member of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh, the Physical Society of Göttingen, and other learned bodies. Works Kinglake attracted attention with his controversial writings on gout, in which he advocated a refrigeration treatment.
