Kingdom Of Niumi
The Kingdom of Niumi, also known as the Kingdom of Barra, was a West African nation at the Gambia River. Niumi was located at the mouth of the river, and extended nearly along and north of its north bank. For much of its existence, its eastern border was occupied by the Kingdom of Baddibu, and its northern border was open savanna leading to Senegal. Formally becoming part of the Gambia Colony and Protectorate in 1897, the Kingdom now forms the Upper Niumi and Lower Niumi districts of the North Bank Division in The Gambia. Etymology and terminology The first written record of the name ‘Niumi’ was in 1455/1456 by Venetian explorer Alvise Cadamosto, who recorded ‘Gnumimenssa’, or in other words ‘Niumi Mansa’ or King of Niumi. Flag Of The Gambia (1889–1965)
The flag of the Gambia is the national flag of the Gambia. It consists of three horizontal red, blue and green bands separated by two thin white lines. Adopted in 1965 to replace the British Blue Ensign defaced with the arms of the Gambia Colony and Protectorate, it has been the flag of the Republic of the Gambia since the country gained independence that year. Barra War
The Barra War, also known as the Anglo-Niumi War and the British-Barra War, was a military conflict from 1831 to 1832 between forces of the British Empire and the Kingdom of Niumi, in what is now The Gambia. Background Over a decade of growing British-Niumi tensions preceded war breaking out in 1831. The Niumi people were determined to preserve their position in trading arrangements and to maintain their kingdom's integrity. The British desired to become the prominent trading power in the Gambia River, rather than the French. In 1824, the French were said to be in control of more than half of the trade in the river. By 1829, there were reports that British merchants were sustaining a "very heavy loss" in trade in the face of competition from foreign powers. During the 1820s, the British renewed interest in inland settlements and trading posts to cut off French trade competition. Jufureh
Jufureh (also spelled Juffureh or Juffure) is a town in the Gambia, 30 kilometers inland on the north bank of the River Gambia in the North Bank Division near James Island. The town is home to a museum and Fort Jillifree. Jufureh is known for its appearance in Alex Haley's 1976 novel '' Roots: The Saga of an American Family'', as the birthplace of Haley's ancestor Kunta Kinte. After the publication of ''Roots'', Jufureh became a significant tourist destination. Dog Island, Gambia
Dog Island is a small island, situated on the Gambia River in the Republic of the Gambia about 13 kilometres from the mouth of the river to the Atlantic Ocean. The area of the island is less than 3.5 hectares. During low tide the island is connected to the mainland, but during high tide it is separated by about 150 metres from the headland of Dog Island Point on the north bank of the river.
