King Of The Coiners
''King of the Coiners'' is a 1912 Australian silent film directed by Alfred Rolfe. It is considered a lost film. Plot The plot consists of two acts and 61 scenes. Luke Holt is a police sergeant who doubles as the head of a gang of counterfeiters under the name of Jean Leroy. He tries to recruit a young engraver, Ned Truman, into the gang but he is too honest. Holt then frames him by getting Biddy Higgins to place counterfeit coins in Truman's room. The young man is sent to gaol and his wife Nellie suffers great hardship. A detective, Ben Burleigh, investigates and uncovers Holt's guilt. Alfred Rolfe (director)
Alfred Rolfe, real name Alfred Roker (1862– 9 September 1943), was an Australian stage and film director and actor, best known for being the son-in-law of the celebrated actor-manager Alfred Dampier, with whom he appeared frequently on stage, and for his prolific output as a director during Australia's silent era, including ''Captain Midnight, the Bush King'' (1911), ''Captain Starlight, or Gentleman of the Road'' (1911) and ''The Hero of the Dardanelles'' (1915). Only one of his films as director survives today. Biography Alfred Roker was born in 1862 in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, the son of Arthur Roker & Mary Ann (''née'' Holman). He used the stage-name 'Alfred Rolfe' when he began working as an actor. ''The Register'', originally the ''South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register'', and later ''South Australian Register,'' was South Australia's first newspaper. It was first published in London in June 1836, moved to Adelaide in 1837, and folded into '' The Advertiser'' almost a century later in February 1931. The newspaper was the sole primary source for almost all information about the settlement and early history of South Australia. It documented shipping schedules, legal history and court records at a time when official records were not kept. ''The Referee'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, Australia from 1886 to 1939. History ''The Referee'' was first published on 20 October 1886 as ''The Sydney Referee'' by Edward Lewis. Godfrey Cass
Godfrey Cass (1867 – 14 May 1951) was an Australian actor in the silent era. Between 1906 and 1935 he acted in nineteen film roles. He played Ned Kelly three times, and also had roles in a number of other bushranger movies including '' A Tale of the Australian Bush'' (1911) and '' Moondyne'' (1913). Biography The son of the Governor of Melbourne Gaol, John Buckley Castieau (1831–1885), Godfrey Cass was born Godfrey Castieau in 1867, one of seven children. As a child he spent a lot of time around the gaol and met Ned Kelly just before Kelly was hung. He began acting in late 1883 or 1884 for J. C. Williamson Ltd. He married Hilda Fraser, with whom he often appeared on stage, in 1894. His peak years as an actor were from 1903 to 1914, usually playing the villain in melodramas. Charles Villiers (actor)
Charles Villiers was an Australian actor and occasional director who appeared in many silent films. According to a contemporary report, "there is probably no actor in Australia that has done more consistent picture work than Mr. Villiers, both as heavy lead, and director." He was particularly well known for playing villains. Biography In 1912 Villiers managed Lytton's Picture Stadium in Orange. Villiers started working in films for the Australian Photoplay Company for whom he was one of their main actors. He then made a series of films for the Fraser Film Release and Photographic Company. In 1914 he toured for 12 months with the Oliver Dramatic Company. Beaumont Smith later estimated Villiers appeared in more than 60 silent films. His wife was also an actor.
