Kinderhook is a town in the northern part of Columbia County, New York, United States. The population was 8,330 at the 2020 census, making it the most populous municipality in Columbia County. The name of the town means "Children's Corner" in the language of the original Dutch settlers (''Kinderhoek''). The name "Kinderhook" has its root in the landing of Henry Hudson in the area around present-day Stuyvesant, where he was greeted by Native Americans with many children. With the Dutch ''kind'' meaning "child" and ''hoek'' meaning "corner", it could be that the name refers to a bend (or "corner") in the river where the children are. The eighth President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, was born in Kinderhook and retired to it. Kinderhook (''Kinderhoek'' in Dutch) is a village in the town of Kinderhook in Columbia County, New York, United States. The village population was 1,211 at the 2010 census. The village of Kinderhook is located in the south-central part of the town on US 9. The eighth President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, was born in Kinderhook and retired to the area (Lindenwald). History The area was named by Henry Hudson in 1609 as ''Kinderhoek'' (Dutch for "children's corner") because he had seen Native American children frequently playing there. First settled by the Dutch around 1640, the area was surrendered to the English in 1664. In 1686, the area was granted the Great Kinderhook Patent and organized into one township. Much of the area's growth did not occur until the 19th century - in 1813, the village had only twenty dwellings. The Kinderhook plates are a set of six small, bell-shaped pieces of brass with unusual engravings, created as a hoax in 1843, surreptitiously buried and then dug up at an Native American mound near Kinderhook, Illinois, United States. The plates were forged by three men from Kinderhook as a prank on the local Latter Day Saint community. According to Latter Day Saint belief, the Book of Mormon is a record of the ancient Judeo-Semitic inhabitants of the Americas, originally translated by the founder of the movement, Joseph Smith, from golden plates engraved in the language of reformed Egyptian. Latter Day Saint residents of Kinderhook sent the plates to Smith in Nauvoo for translation, where Smith said they were of ancient origin and translated a portion of them. In 1980, scientific testing confirmed the hoax, and that the plates were a modern creation.
