Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Galway Senior Hurling Championship
The Galway Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Brooks Galway Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Galway County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1887 for the top hurling teams in the county of Galway in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Pearse Stadium in November. Initially played as a knock-out competition, the championship currently consists of a group stage followed by a knock-out series of games. The Galway County Championship is an integral part of the wider All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship. The winners of the Galway county final automatically represent Connacht and join the champions of the other three provinces to contest the All-Ireland Championship. Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship
The Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship was an annual hurling tournament played between the senior hurling clubs in Connacht contested from 1970 until 2007 when it was discontinued due to a lack of meaningful opposition for the Galway champions. The Galway champions now qualify directly for the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship semi-final. Throughout the competition's existence the Galway champions automatically qualified for the final. In 2007, the competition's final year, this competition was won by Portumna from Galway. The competition had long since become a formality for the Galway teams. The Mayo and Roscommon champions now compete in the Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship. Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship
The Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship is an annual club competition in Connacht. Prior to 2008, county champions competed in the senior grade, but since then the senior champions from Mayo and Roscommon compete at intermediate level along with the Galway intermediate champions, who receive a bye to the final. The winners go on to compete for the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship. Beginning with the 2018 championship, the London champions compete in the competition, entering at the semi-final stage. The competition has been won by the Galway representatives on each occasion, with the exception of Mayo club Tooreen's wins in 2017, 2019 & 2021. Brian Concannon (hurler)
Brian Concannon (born 1997) is an Irish hurler who plays as a right corner-forward for club side Killimordaly and at inter-county level with the Galway senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a right corner-forward. Playing career NUI Galway As a student at NUI Galway, Concannon has been a regular player on the university's senior hurling team in the Fitzgibbon Cup. Killimordaly Concannon joined the Killimordaly club at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels before joining the club's senior team. Galway Minor and under-21 Concannon first played for Galway as a member of the minor hurling team on 26 July 2015. He made his first appearance in a 1-14 to 0-13 All-Ireland quarter-final defeat of Limerick. Tom Donoghue
Thomas "Tom" Donohue (born 24 January 1951) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a right corner-back for the Offaly senior team. Donohue began his sporting career in his home county of Galway, playing hurling at club level with Killimordaly and was later selected to represent his home county. In 1972, he was on the Galway team that defeated Dublin to win their first U-21 All-Ireland hurling final. In 1976, Donohue was offered a permanent teaching position in Tullamore, County Offaly and joined Ballinamere GAA club some time later. From there, he was selected for the Offaly senior hurling panel and made his first appearance during the 1980-81 National League. He became a regular player for the following two seasons. Tony Keady
Tony Keady (5 December 1963 – 9 August 2017) was an Irish hurler. His league and championship career at senior level with the Galway county team lasted nine seasons from 1985 until 1993. Born in Attymon, County Galway, Keady first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Athenry Vocational School. In 1980 he was selected for the Galway vocational schools team and went on to win-back-to-back All-Ireland medals over the next two years. By this stage Keady was a regular player at underage levels with the Killimordaly club. After winning several minor and under-21 championship medals, he won a county junior championship medal in 1983 before winning a county senior championship medal in 1986. He later won a Connacht medal. Keady made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he was selected for the Galway minor team. John Ryan (Galway Hurler)
John Ryan (April 1958 - 7 October 2003) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Galway senior team. Born in Killimordaly, County Galway, Ryan first played competitive hurling whilst at Presentation College, Athenry. He made his first impression on the inter-county scene when he joined the Galway under-21 team. He made his senior debut during the 1980 championship. Ryan went on to play a key role for Galway for a short period, and won one All-Ireland medal and one National Hurling League medal. At club level Ryan was a one-time Connacht medallist with Killimordaly. He also won one championship medal with the club. Throughout his career Ryan made just four championship appearances for Galway. His retirement came following the conclusion of the 1984 championship.
