Killarney Franciscan Friary
Killarney Franciscan Friary is a monastic establishment in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. The Franciscan community in Killarney was established in 1860, when Franciscan friars transferred from Gorey, County Wexford, where they had been for two years. The Franciscan church was completed in 1867 and consecrated in 1868, and the friary opened 1879, designed by J.J. McCarthy. The church was consecrated by Bishop David Moriarty (who had laid the foundation stone in 1864) and is dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity, the title of the old Muckross Abbey. In 1902 the friary became the novitiate house of the Irish Province (which had previously been in Ennis Friary). Christian Monasticism
Christian monasticism is the devotional practice of Christians who live ascetic and typically cloistered lives that are dedicated to Christian worship. It began to develop early in the history of the Christian Church, modeled upon scriptural examples and ideals, including those in the Old Testament, but not mandated as an institution in the scriptures. It has come to be regulated by religious rules (e. g. the Rule of Saint Augustine, Anthony the Great, St Pachomius, the Rule of St Basil, the Rule of St Benedict,) and, in modern times, the Canon law of the respective Christian denominations that have forms of monastic living. Kalem Company
The Kalem Company was an early American film studio founded in New York City in 1907. It was one of the first companies to make films abroad and to set up winter production facilities, first in Florida and then in California. Kalem was sold to Vitagraph Studios in 1917. Formation and history The Kalem Company was founded by George Kleine, Samuel Long, and Frank J. Marion. The company was named for their initials K, L, and M. Kalem immediately joined other studios in the Motion Picture Patents Company that held a monopoly on production and distribution. William Slattery
William Slattery, O.F.M., is an Irish-born Franciscan who served as Bishop of Kokstad from 1993 to 2010, before being appointed Archbishop of Pretoria and Bishop of South Africa, Military. William Mathew Slattery was born in County Tipperary, Ireland in 1943. He joined the Franciscans in 1962, and gained a BA degree from University College Galway. He was ordained, and obtained a licence in theology in Rome in 1970, before going to South Africa in 1971. He served in various dioceses in South Africa and also in Malawi; he has also been Rector of St John Vianney Seminary. In 1993 he was appointed Bishop of Kokstad. In 2005 he invited the Irish charity Respond! (founded by his fellow Franciscans) to provide services in the diocese, and in 2009 supported their setting up of a housing association, Silvie. Fiachra Ó Ceallaigh
Fiachra Ó Ceallaigh, O.F.M. (18 August 1933, Lissycasey, Ireland – 29 July 2018, Dublin, Ireland) was an Irish Roman Catholic bishop. On 17 September 2009, he retired as an Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Dublin. Life Ó Ceallaigh trained at the Franciscan Novitiate in Killarney. He studied Irish and Celtic studies at UCG, and also gained a Higher Diploma in Education. He also studied in Louvain and in Rome. He was ordained a priest on 2 July 1961 in the Order of Friars Minor. He was appointed to Gormanstown College. Wilfrid Fox Napier OFM (born 8 March 1941) is a South African prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Durban from 1992 to 2021 and has been a cardinal since 2001. He served as Bishop of Kokstad from 1981 to 1992. Biography Napier was born on 8 March 1941 in Matatiele, South Africa. He graduated from University College Galway in 1964 with a degree in Latin and English. John Evangelist McBride, O.F.M. (12 March 1903 – 12 February 1992) was an Irish prelate of the Catholic Church who was bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Kokstad in South Africa from 1949 to 1951 and of the Diocese of Kokstad from 1951 to 1978. Bonaventure Hinwood (12 February 1930 – 8 September 2016) was a Roman Catholic priest and Afrikaans poet. Hinwood was the first South African to join the Irish Province of the Franciscan Order in Pretoria, South Africa. Conversion to Roman Catholicism Hinwood was baptized as a Methodist and later became an Anglican. He attended the University of the Witwatersrand(Wits), BA degree in History and English in 1950, BA (Hons) in History in 1951 and trained in librarianship. Stained glass is coloured glass as a material or works created from it.
