Eva King Killam
Eva King Killam (1920/21 – July 30, 2006) was a research pharmacologist who studied the activity of drugs on the brain and behavior, developing animal models for epilepsy and opiate dependence. Killam was the first woman to be awarded the John J. Abel Award in Pharmacology from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) in 1954, and the second woman to be elected as president of ASPET, in 1989. A founding member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) in 1961, she became the first woman President of the ACNP in 1988. Early life and education Ellen Eva King was a daughter of Charles Henry King and Louise M. Richter. She had a sister Louise and an older brother, Charles, Jr. who worked for NASA. Izaak Walton Killam
Izaak Walton Killam (July 23, 1885 – August 5, 1955) was a Canadian financier. Early life Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, he was the son of William Dudman Killam and Arabella Hunter (Belle) Cann. Business ventures As a young banker with the Union Bank of Halifax, Killam became close friends with John F. Stairs and Max Aitken (Lord Beaverbrook) who put Killam in charge of his Royal Securities. In 1919, Killam bought out Aitken and took full control of the company. Killam's business dealings primarily involved the financing of large pulp and paper and hydro-electric projects throughout Canada and Latin America. Killam was believed to be the richest man in Canada at the time. Frank Killam
Frank Killam (September 3, 1843 – April 23, 1911) was a Canadian politician and a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Yarmouth in Nova Scotia. Biography He was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1843, the son of Thomas Killam and Elizabeth Gale Dudman, and was educated in Yarmouth and Sackville, New Brunswick. Killam entered business in Yarmouth. In September 1867, he married Ellen Hood. On September 21, 1867, he lost his left arm when a cannon prematurely detonated during an election celebration. The accident killed one person. Following the death of his father, he ran for his father's former seat in the 1st Canadian Parliament in a by-election held on April 20, 1869. Albert Clements Killam
Albert Clements Killam, (September 18, 1849 – March 1, 1908) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, judge, railway commissioner, and Puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada. He was the first judge from Western Canada to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the son of George Killam and Caroline Clements, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1872 from the University of Toronto. He articled with the firm of Crooks, Kingsmill, and Cattanach of Toronto and was called to the Ontario bar in 1877. He practised for two years in Windsor. In 1879, he moved to Winnipeg and was called to the Manitoba bar. In 1881 he became an examiner of the Law Society of Manitoba, and he served as a bencher of the society from 1882 to 1885. Gordon Douglas Killam (1930-2020), known to friends as Doug Killam, was a Canadian scholar of African literature. Life Killam was born on August 26, 1930, the son of Harry and Margaret Killam of British Columbia. After working as a producer with CBC Television, he gained a PhD from University College London in 1964 and moved into academia. He travelled and taught in Africa, in Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Tanzania. He also taught at Canadian Universities, including UBC, the University of Alberta and University of Acadia. At the University of York he was the Foujnding Master of Bethune College. At the University of Guelph he made the Department of English a recognised centre of post-colonial studies.
