East Texas League
The East Texas League was a Texas–based minor league baseball league that existed between 1916 to 1950. The East Texas League played as a Class D level league in 1916 and from 1923 to 1926. The league became a Class C level league from 1936 to 1940, 1946 and 1949 to 1950. The Tyler Trojans and Henderson Oilers each won three league championships. Turkey Gross
Ewell "Turkey" Gross (February 21, 1896 – January 11, 1936) was a shortstop in Major League Baseball who played briefly for the Boston Red Sox during the 1925 season. Listed at , 165 lb., Gross batted and threw right-handed. Ewell "Turkey" Gross once completed an unassisted triple play at third base. He caught the hit, tagged the man coming from second base, and got the man headed for home plate as he attempted to scramble back to third base. The son of Alfred and Mary Gross, Ewell played for several seasons in the Texas League during the 1920s and later served as manager of the Dallas Steers, Paris (Texas) Colts and Kilgore Gushers. He died of a kidney infection in 1936 and is buried in Mesquite Cemetery. Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The game occurs over the course of several plays, with each play generally beginning when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball that a player on the batting team, called the batter, tries to hit with a bat.
