Kiev Connolly
Kevin "Kiev" Connolly (born 5 April 1956) is an Irish songwriter, producer and musician. His group, Kiev Connolly and The Missing Passengers, represented Ireland at the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest. Early life and education Born in Ballymote, County Sligo, Connolly attended school in Cork. He moved to Germany in 1978, and worked as a studio musician and producer in West Berlin. Career Connolly formed the pop group "The Missing Passengers" in 1985. The group secured a recording contract with Ariola/RCA in Germany and "toured Europe extensively". In 1985, the group performed Connolly's song "Did She Tell You" on both the Extratour program Radio Bremen/ARD, and the Musik Convoy program on WDR/ARD. Connolly returned to Ireland in 1987. In 1989, Kiev Connolly and The Missing Passengers represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lausanne, Switzerland with Connolly's song The Real Me. Eurovision Song Contest 1989
The Eurovision Song Contest 1989 was the 34th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, following Céline Dion's victory at the with the song "Ne partez pas sans moi". Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG SSR), the contest was held at Palais de Beaulieu on 6 May 1989 and was hosted by Swiss model Lolita Morena and journalist Jacques Deschenaux. Twenty-two countries took part in the contest with returning after having been disqualified the year before. The winner was with the song " Rock Me" by Croatian band Riva. This was the only victory for Yugoslavia as a unified state. As of 2022 they are still the last act to win the contest performing last. Somewhere In Europe (song)
For the Eurovision Song Contest 1990 in Zagreb, the song "Somewhere in Europe", written, composed and performed by Liam Reilly, was chosen to represent Ireland after it won the national final selection. Before Eurovision National final Held on 25 March 1990 at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, the national final was hosted by Jimmy Greeley and Cliona Ni Bhuachalla. Eight songs competed in the event, and the winner was selected by twelve regional juries. Liam Reilly had previously competed in Ireland's 1988 national final, where he placed second behind Jump the Gun. Linda Martin was runner-up to Sweden in the 1984 contest. At Eurovision "Somewhere In Europe" was performed 17th in the running order on the night of the contest, following Portugal and preceding Sweden.
