Kiev 1903 Chess Tournament
The 3rd All-Russian Masters' Tournament took place in the rooms of the Kiev Chess Society in the Popov Building at No. 29 Kreshchatyk in Kiev on September 1–26, 1903. The Society used the rooms of the Kiev Bicycle Association which had its premises on the second floor of the aforementioned building on the corner of the Kreshchatyk & Lutheran (#29 Kreshchatyk) right next door to the Warsaw Café. A Polish nobleman, count A.F. Plater, the president of the Kiev Chess Society (''Kievskoye Shakhmatnoye Obshchestvo'') was the tournament patron, Loxting and Vengerov were tournament officials. Russian Chess Championship
The Russian Chess Championship has taken various forms. Winners by year (men) Imperial Russia In 1874, Emanuel Schiffers defeated Andrey Chardin in a match held in St. Petersburg with five wins and four losses. Schiffers was considered the first Russian champion until his student, Mikhail Chigorin, defeated him in a match held in St. Petersburg in 1879. Chigorin won with seven wins, four losses, and two draws. In 1899, the format of the championship was changed to a round-robin tournament known as the All-Russian Masters' Tournament. The winners were: : RSFSR After the formation of the USSR the USSR Chess Championship was established as the national championship. However the Russian championship continued to exist as the championship of the RSFSR. The first two USSR championships in 1920 and 1923 were also recognized as RSFSR championships; the modern numbering of Russian championships begins with these two tournaments. Abram Rabinovich
Abram Isaakovich Rabinovich (5 January 1878 – 7 November 1943) was a Lithuanian–Russian chess player. He was champion of Moscow in 1926. Biography Rabinovich was born in Vilna, Lithuania (then the Russian Empire) into a Litvak family. His parents were Itzik (Isaac) Haimovich and Leia Leibovna Rabinovich, natives of Shnipishek. In 1903, Rabinovich tied for 11-12th places in Kiev (3rd All-Russian Masters' Tournament, Mikhail Chigorin won). In 1908, he took 19th in Prague (Oldřich Duras and Carl Schlechter won). In 1909, he tied for 2nd-3rd in Vilna (6th All-Russian Masters' Tournament; Akiba Rubinstein won). In 1911, he tied for 19th-21st in Carlsbad (Richard Teichmann won). In 1912, he took 18th in Vilna (''Hauptturnier'', Karel Hromádka won). During World War I, he moved to Moscow. In 1916, he tied for 4th-5th, and was 3rd in 1918.
