Kieron Testart
Kieron Testart is a former Canadian politician who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 2015 election. He represented the electoral district of Kam Lake until the 2019 election, when he was defeated by Caitlin Cleveland. Testart finished third in the electoral district behind Cleveland and Robert Hawkins. An employee of the territorial Department of Justice, Testart was a candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada nomination for Northwest Territories in the 2015 federal election, but withdrew from the race to endorse Michael McLeod. In 2018, Testart introduced an amendment to the territorial Elections Act to permit the introduction of party politics in the legislative assembly, but his motion received no support from other MLAs and was dropped. Legislative Assembly Of The Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". Robert Hawkins (Northwest Territories Politician)
Robert Hawkins is an engineering technologist and a former municipal and territorial level politician from Northwest Territories, Canada. Early life Hawkins moved to Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories in 1977 as a child. Hawkins moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories in 1987 to begin schooling at Sir John Franklin High School. He attended his post secondary education at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary, Alberta. He began his political career when he was elected as a city councillor for Yellowknife City Council. He held that post until 2003 when he sought election to the territorial legislature. Michael McLeod (born September 6, 1959) is a Canadian politician, currently serving as a member of Parliament representing the Northwest Territories. He was first elected in the 2015 Canadian federal election, unseating Dennis Bevington, who was the incumbent New Democratic Party MP for the riding. McLeod was a former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, Canada, as well as the former mayor of Fort Providence. Political career McLeod was born in Fort Providence, Northwest Territories. When he was 22, he served as a mayor of Fort Providence after being chosen by the local Dene council. The 2015 Canadian federal election held on October 19, 2015, saw the Liberal Party, led by Justin Trudeau, win 184 seats, allowing it to form a majority government with Trudeau becoming the next prime minister. The election was held to elect members to the House of Commons of the 42nd Canadian Parliament. Northwest Territories (electoral District)
Northwest Territories (french: Territoires du Nord-Ouest) is a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada. The electoral district covers the entire territory. This riding was created in 1962 from Mackenzie River riding. It was composed of the entire territory of the Northwest Territories. In 1979, the riding was divided into the ridings of Western Arctic and Nunatsiaq (later Nunavut). Following the creation of the territory of Nunavut in 1999, the riding of Western Arctic was made coterminous with the new Northwest Territories. After 1999, Western Arctic was an anomaly in that, unlike Nunavut and Yukon, it did not share the name of the territory with which it was coterminous. The 2019 Northwest Territories general election was held on October 1, 2019. Nineteen members were elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Election On September 6, 2019, Premier Bob McLeod announced that he would not seek re-election. Yellowknife
Yellowknife (; Dogrib: ) is the capital, largest community, and only city in the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, about south of the Arctic Circle, on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River. Yellowknife and its surrounding water bodies were named after a local Dene tribe, who were known as the "Copper Indians" or "Yellowknife Indians", today incorporated as the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.
