The ''Kieler Nachrichten'' (literally "Kiel News") or ''KN'' is the only German-language newspaper published in Kiel, Germany. It is published by "Kieler Zeitung Verlags und Druckerei KG-GmbH & Co.", a subdivision of Axel Springer AG which owns 24.5 percent of the company. The newspaper's office is located at Asmus-Bremer-Platz between Holstenstraße and the Kiel city hall. The ''KN'' was first published on 3 April 1946, with the permission of the British in occupied Germany after World War II. The newspaper later considered itself a successor to the ''Kieler Zeitung'' (founded 1864) and the ''Kieler Neueste Nachrichten'' (founded 1894). Jørgen Kieler
Jørgen Kieler (23 August 1919 – 19 February 2017) was a Danish physician, remembered primarily for his participation in resistance activities under the German occupation of Denmark in the early 1940s. He was captured and was placed in a prison and Nazi concentration camps. Saved by the White Buses of the Bernadotte rescue, Kieler was treated for tuberculosis for two years after his release. After the war, he wrote a book about his war-time experiences and supported other Danish concentration camp survivors as president of the Freedom Foundation of Denmark. He was director of the Danish Cancer Society. Early life Jørgen Kieler, the son of a physician of Jutland, studied medicine with his sister Elsebet in England, France, Germany, and Copenhagen. Laura Kieler
Laura Kieler (born 9 January 1849 in Tromsø, Norway – died 23 April 1932 in Ålsgårde, Denmark) was a Norwegian-Danish novelist. Events from her life and marriage served as the inspiration for the character Nora Helmer in Henrik Ibsen's play ''A Doll's House''. Biography She was born Laura Anna Sophie Müller to a Norwegian father, Morten Smith Petersen von Führen, and Danish mother, Anna Hansine Kjerulf Müller. When Kieler was nineteen years old, she wrote a response to Henrik Ibsen's play ''Brand,'' Brand's Døtre, that endeared her to Ibsen and his wife. They became friends and nurtured her literary ambitions. In 1873, she married Victor Kieler, a schoolteacher. Kieler, Wisconsin
Kieler is an unincorporated census-designated place in the Town of Jamestown, Wisconsin, Jamestown in Grant County, Wisconsin, Grant County, Wisconsin. It is located about seven miles northeast of the Iowa-Wisconsin border and the city of Dubuque, Iowa, and about four miles southwest of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, along U.S. Highway 61 and U.S. Highway 151. As of the United States Census, 2010, 2010 census, its population was 497. History The community was named after John Kieler, an immigrant from Prussia who arrived in the area in 1855. Education Immaculate Conception, the only Roman Catholic, Catholic church in Kieler, was constructed in 1858. The church was remodeled in 1896, when a rock exterior and two front towers were added. A 2004 addition includes a large gathering area on the west side. Holy Ghost/Immaculate Conception School serves students in grades 4 through 8. Kieler Yacht-Club
Kieler Yacht-Club (''Kiel Yacht Club'') is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Germany. It is located in the harbor city of Kiel. This club is well known for some of the yacht racing events it organizes. The main one is the yearly Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), which is perhaps the biggest sailing event in the world. In 1972, when the Olympic Games were held in Munich, the Olympic sailing competitions took place in the Kiel Bay and this yacht club had a major role in their organization. Historical background A club for military personnel, the "Marine-Regatta-Verein" ("Naval Regatta Club"), was established in 1887 in Kiel by officers of the Imperial German Navy. Prince Heinrich of Prussia, a yachting enthusiast and German Emperor's Wilhelm II's younger brother, was its patron. In 1891 Wilhelm II became the club's commodore, bringing his own yacht ''Meteor I'' (the former ''Thistle'') to the club's marina in Kiel.
