Kiekko-Vantaa
Kiekko-Vantaa is an ice hockey team from Vantaa, Finland, playing in the Mestis league. It plays its home games in Trio Areena. Kiekko-Vantaa has been in Mestis since the league started in 2000 and have been in the finals twice, losing both times. The team was owned by South Korean businessman Chung Mong-won from 2012 to 2015. Antti Niemi (ice Hockey)
Antti Niemi (; born 29 August 1983) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey goaltender. He last played for Jokerit of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Niemi previously played in the National Hockey League (NHL). During the 2009–10 season as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, he became the first Finnish goaltender to win the Stanley Cup. Niemi also played for the San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, and Montreal Canadiens. Playing career Early years Niemi played junior-level hockey for Kiekko-Vantaa from 1998 until 2005, where he also worked part-time as a Zamboni driver and later had his number retired. Juha Pekka Kaunismäki (born 6 May 1979 in Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish-born Norwegian professional ice hockey defenceman, who currently plays with Stavanger Oilers of the Norway's elite GET-ligaen. Career Kaunismäki began playing in Finland with the Jokerit organization's junior teams. He later played for Kiekko-Vantaa of the third-level Suomi-sarja and the second-level Mestis. Kaunismäki played a total of five seasons in Mestis league, two with Kiekko-Vantaa and three with Ahmat Hyvinkää. In 2003 he joined Stavanger of the Norwegian league. Mestis (from fi, Mestaruussarja, meaning 'Championship series') is the second-highest men's ice hockey league in Finland. The league was established by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association in 2000 to replace the I-divisioona ('First Division'). It had initially been the highest hockey league in Finland that could be reached through playing merits alone; the SM-liiga was closed (to teams being relegated or promoted) in 2000. After the 2004–05 season, KalPa was promoted to the SM-liiga, and the Liiga was re-opened in the 2008–09 season. Vaasan Sport was promoted in 2014–15, KooKoo was promoted in 2015–16, and Jukurit was promoted in 2016–17. Mestis, however, is an open league, with promotion and relegation between it and Suomi-sarja. However there will be no relegation during the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ilari Filppula
Ilari Antti Sakari Filppula (born 5 November 1981) is a Finnish professional ice hockey forward currently playing for the TPS in the Finnish Liiga. He is the older brother of Valtteri Filppula. Playing career Filppula started his pro career in Kiekko-Vantaa, in the Finnish lower leagues, and after two years with JYP, he spent a season with Jokerit, and then returned to JYP with a two-year contract. In 2008, he signed a 2-year contract with TPS. Filppula won the Jari Kurri trophy in 2010. On 15 June 2010, Filppula signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings assigned Filppula to their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, during training camp. Joonas Rönnberg (born February 19, 1983) is a Finnish professional ice hockey defenceman. He currently plays for HC Ludwig in Vantaa, Finland. Suomi-sarja
The Suomi-sarja is Finland's third-highest ice hockey league. Suomi-sarja has 14 teams. Suomi-sarja has been played since the 1999–2000 season. Prior to this, Finland's third league had been Division II since 1975 and before that the Provincial Series since 1947. During the 1990s the series also included an Estonian team. The series was played in two segments in the 2006–2007 season. During the 2007–2008 season there were four divisions. Teams playing in the Suomi-sarja can be relegated to the 2. Divisioona or promoted to Mestis. During the 2022–23 season, there are 13 teams. Chung Mong-won ( ko, 정몽원, born 4 August 1955) is a South Korean ice hockey administrator and businessman. He has served as chief executive officer of both Halla Group and Mando Corporation, founded the Anyang Halla hockey team in 1994, and co-founded Asia League Ice Hockey in 2003. He became involved in international ice hockey as manager of the South Korea men's national ice hockey team in 2003, then became chairman of the Korea Ice Hockey Association in 2013, and implemented a development plan for the men's national team and the South Korea women's national ice hockey team in advance of ice hockey at the 2018 Winter Olympics hosted in South Korea. Joonas Vihko
Joonas Vihko (born April 6, 1981) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey winger. Vihko began his career with Kiekko-Vantaa before moving to his hometown team HIFK in 1998. Having played in U18 and U20 level he eventually made his way up to the senior team. In 2004-05 he was loaned out to HC Salamat and in 2005-06 he moved to SaiPa for a brief tenure. He then signed with HPK and after four seasons he moved to Sweden to sign for Luleå HF.
